We have about a dozen huge black walnut trees, some are about 50-60 years old. Many of them began dropping their nuts about a week ago, I have never known them to begin shedding walnuts this early in the year. Thankfully there are not a lot of them to pick up this season, at times in the past there were so many it was practically walnut-to-walnut carpeting in my front yard....

Yeah, what a stupid joke....

I haven't got walnuts, but I have apples!

The apple tree at the foot of our lawn has started dropping lots of tiny apples.

I have to spend about 20 minutes picking them all up prior to mowing.

When they get large enough to eat, I will feel happier about it, but for now, when they are the size of grapes, I am getting fed up of the bloody things!

Wait a second, are they edible ? If so, start selling them!

I a a lot of black walnut trees around my place also and they are edible. The only thing I see about them they make a big mess. There is no market around here to sell the nuts except the wood is very sell able.

Of you had any idea of how much work it is to prepare black walnuts....first you have to clean off the green oily, stinking outer husk, then wash the inner nuts to get the rest of the husk off, then dry the nuts, crack them, dig out the edible part...one of the reasons they cost so much to buy in a store is the amount of time and work to obtain the nuts themselves...one year I put out a few 5 gallon pails full of the green nuts with a sign that said "FREE" and the people who stopped dumped the nuts out and took the pails......

I've had marginal results with my lawn sweeper picking up all sorts of detritus before I mow. The biggest caveat is watch out for ripe fruit:eek:; it wants to turn into jam on the brushes of the sweeper!:biggrin:

My father in-laws neighbor was using some contraption to pick up walnuts. He was rolling something around on the ground. I had never seen it before. It looked very simple to use. So I had to google it and found out it is one of these- Nut Wizard Home

It looked like it worked amazing.

Maybe a really high power lawn vac. I think raking is the most effective

I find they make good food for the tree rats ( Squirrels ).

I believe a five gallon bucket and a pair of gloves is the fastest way to gather walnuts. Just have a truck or loader close bye to empty the bucket into.

I have the apples also. They feed the deer. The snow will be coming in few week and all the nuts and apples will be gone with the snow next spring. Then a few more walnut tress will start growing in the woods next year. Black walnut logs are worth very good money and what is left over makes good fire wood. Any of the trees that start growing in the lawn just get mowed down.

You want to clean up walnuts every day or so. Just kick them to a spot. Rake them to a spot. Pick them up and toss them to a spot. Once enough of them are in the spot to suit you just take a dust pan and shovel them up and load them into a large plastic trash can. 99 out of a hundred Walnut or fruit trees here in town are never even looked at much less picked up.

I mowed a lawn with apples the other day.....most were destroyed by the time I saw done....either smashed by the tires or sliced in half by the blade! :licking:

It's a seed pod from a sweet gum tree, a tree we have in the south. The seed pod looks like a porcupine egg:laughing:

Hitting a sweet gum ball is like hitting a small rock. When they first fall from the tree.
I hate the damn things. Them and magnolia trees

It's annoying when you brush up against a branch and get like 10 of them on your pants! :frown:

A little late to the thread, but i hate walnuts they end up getting stuck in the billy goats. I've found the best way to pick them up is a high school kid a rake a bucket, gloves and about $8 an hour on my crew.

Depends on how bad he smells from the walnuts. Just kidding he rides in the truck, he even gets a company shirt, hoodie, hat, bennie cap and i buy his gloves. I like them to look good while they're doing the dirty work.

I have 6 very tall black walnut trees and I just cut 4 of them down. The balls are a pain in the u know what and those start to fall around july slowly and leave are already down in PA. I am going to cut 1 more tree but keep the other because of the shade. Those trees are such a pain because i have to clean up the balls before I cut my yard so I do not destroy my blades. I am so glad they are gone.

the best use for sweet gum balls is to clean a mower deck.....wet grass wont stay under there if you run over a bunch of sweet gum balls
