Lol :) either way another annoying spammer gone. Now if they would try to sell something good like snap-on or mac tools that would be fun but purses really? On a lawn mower website? What is our ratio of men to women on here anyway. And how many men on here carry murses?

hoa.hoa251 has also had his post removed and is banned. if you look at the currently active users list you'll find that he is still there along with the others listed in red. Some are banned some are not but the ones that are not banned haven't posted as of yet so there's nothing we can do about them. I know people look at us as moderators and think we can take care of about anything that comes up but in reality we are very very limited as to what we can do so plese keep that in mind the next time someone says we are not doing our job here as moderators.

There's a few things you (LMF) can do. Where are most of the spam and potential spam accounts joining from, China? Vietnam? If you block anything and everything .cn or .vn you'll probably eliminate 90% of the problem. Whole country host & IP bans are easy enough to do.

As for the accounts that join and they haven't posted and if you know or have a very strong suspicion they're spam accounts, put them on a 2 week administrative hold with an email address to contact. If they log in within those 14 days and make no attempt to make contact, permaban the account. Period. I can guarantee you they'll be back on the 15th day or in 15 weeks or in 15 months to do their thing. They always come back.

You guys report (ip/email/username) to SFS? If not, do so. Even if there's no reportable evidence for SFS (post spam, signature spam, link spam, hidden spam, etc.), in the evidence box, report that the account was caught in the LMF honeypot. 'Tis all you need to report for evidence but make damn sure (Google and SFS searches are your friends) said spammer has been previously reported. This is also a good thing to do before the administrative hold accounts are permabanned. Check on SFS, if they've been reported, re-report. You have 14 days to report to SFS.

Spam can be beat down to where its an amusing thing to toy with on a rainy day. You just have to work at it 24/7. EVERY new account needs to have the IP and at least the email addy run through the SFS database. If you had a spam account get through its because it wasn't previously reported. Spam accounts don't report themselves. The only way SFS works is if everything is reported and asap. Report, report, report. I have roughly 1000 new members sign up every month on my forum. Every new account gets a background check within 24 hours. I went from perhaps 15% spam accounts a couple of years ago to 3-5 spam accounts/month. It can be beat. Once you get blacklisted on Xrumer then spammers pretty much leave you alone.

You should be able to do a IP ban very easily. You can also ban by email. And as suggested above, simply blocking and registration from .cn can do wonders to keep the spam away. If a legitimate member from China wants to join, they can always sens an email. I have used this method on my forum for years.

Your not telling me anything I don't know, I'm the Administrator of several other forums. The problem is I can't use the IP address/ email here to ban a member. As moderators and using the moderator control panel we don't have access to use those. Moderators can permanently ban members using there usernames only, to be done using anything else has to apparently has to come from the administrative level. LMF and myself are doing the best we can do with what we have.

No 'supermod' option in the forum software? Its a pothole filled road if mods have to ban by username only without having at least the option to see where the member hails from.

I've got things set up with my 2 most Sr. moderators with supermod power and they have the ability to ban using username, email or in the very rare case with a couple (or more) accounts popping up with the same IP, to ban all or selectively prune by IP. Makes life much easier for everyone when there's multiple avenues of attack. vB 4.x.x.

This is an interesting thread, but I think it misses the opportunity to discuss what is really going on with much of the spam I have seen here. Most of it is nonsense text with hidden urls as part of the text, whose sole purpose in many cases is to deliver drive by malware! google moneypack virus(or fbi virus) to see and example. Many of the users on these forums are not IT people and might not recognise the risk for what it is. Getting rid of the spam is the best thing however once it is on the forum and starting to get read... then the risk rises.

My laptop has had the money pack virus twice... you can't actually get rid of it anything short of a full wipe of hard disk and reinstall of windows

Most times I am on here, it is at work(TN Dept. Of Treasury) and believe me when your network has the responsibility for every penny of State government dollars(incoming/outgoing) our Windows desktops have leading edge malware/firewall technology that even protects my individual workstation from being "compromised". After going through several Windows PC products at home(McAffee, Norton, Trend Micro, Kapersky) as well as additional layers of freeware, like Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, etc. I finally bit the bullet last May(when my circa 2005 Compaq Presario finally bit the dust..."something" wiped out the bios) and bought a "real computer"(2012 iMac with Mountain Lion and 24GB of memory). Between strong passwords for user accounts, OSX firewall, no Auto Login, FileVault and external drive encryption I feel pretty protected from the knarly stuff hackers have at their disposal. After 42 years specializing in mainframe support/technology(btw Mainframe and UNIX rarely, if ever, have unathorized access) I simply feel sorry for hackers that with their skillset cannot find an occupation that is actually a "contribution" to society rather than a burden on it:0(

Ha.. back when I was good with computer code mostly c++ and c# and html this was when win 98 was still newish :) for my middle school tech final I rewrote win95 I found out windows has a line of code in it where it purposefully loses memory something like 500k a day. And was doomed to fail after 5 years. So I rewrote it burned it to a disk and put it on my (now rly old) compaq laptop and amazingly with no virus protection and annual formatting reinstalling my win95 we have no problems and still use it for basic web stuff.

My point is there is no "real" computer just like lawn mowers your computer needs maintenance. Delete cookies and temp files weekly. Defrag monthly. Keep your recycle bin empty. Keep your start up folder as empty as possible. Kill useless background programs.

Most importantly never I repeat never have any virus program that runs full time on your computer. They drain your memory slow your computer and by definition are themselves viruses.

I dont think I have ever described apples mac line of computers as real computers, implying the rest are not. Apply certainly does many things right with it, enforcing sudo and setting the defaults to be much more secure... windoz could be that way and Microsux likes to think it is.. but until they stop letting the default user be admin with full admin rights... that ain't gonna happen. I have been a unix admin now for 25 plus year haveing started in mf and then mini's... so I understand what you mean completely. The 1st thing I tell anyone who asks me to fix their kids computer that is virus ridden... is create a new user for him w/o admin rights, and then change the user with admin rights to a pw that only you the parent knows... and never tell your kid! When my sons lt was hit with the money pak virus, while his user kept displaying the ransomeware... if I rebooted as admin... no problems at all. This allowed me to fix his login.

Oh yeah, rule number one of a spam post - Never, never, ever click the link. And if checking out the member's account, never click the website link. Or the signature.

And beware of the.hidden stuff (like this last sentence).

And just because, here's the obvious stuff from yesterday:

Good advice!!! I won't even click on a link I receive in an email from "someone I know" until I contact them first. It's too easy to have your email address hacked nowadays(especially if you use a hotmail, gmail, etc. account).

Chances are that if you have a hotmail, gmail, etc. account your email addy already is hacked. I see & deal with it nearly every day. Many forums no longer allow registration email addies from the 'Big 3.' (gmail, hotmail, yahoo)

Gotcha.....home computers are going more and more towards detachable "tablet design" rather than desktop(although I went with the "all in one" design iMac). I do have an iPad though(I use it for when we go RV'ing since it's so small & portable) so I may have to check out the LMF app in iTunes:0)
