Been spending the last few days working on neighbor (JRs) plumbing (for those who don't know, JR is 85). He has a spring fed cystern and Jet Pump at the house. Everything was plugged and he still has Galvanized pipe and a Galvanized pressure tank - I think we will end up replacing everything. It is a small crawl space and it has been in the 90s with high humidity.
I check in to see what is going on, but haven't spent much time on the computer recently.

I don't envy you one bit...nice of you to help JR and I have replumbed two houses that had all galvanized. It's strong, lasts forever, but is a HUGE PIB to work on. I had some parts of it that were 55 years old and still didn't leak. And you could bang on them with a sledge and they still didn't leak. Try that with copper or plastic....:laughing:

Weren't leaking, but most were so full of rust and crud that a 1" pipe had about a soda straw size flow of water. The Goulds Pump runs, but won't build any pressure, so I guess the next step is to basically pull everything out and start over.
I'll try to clean out the impeller first, but expect to be getting everything new. Will plan to move all the pipes to one side or the other of the entry instead of crawling around and over the mess that is in there. JR used what he had and made it fit. I'll try to do it neatly with unions so things can be taken apart without cutting. This has nothing to do with mowing, except that the mowing had been put on hold until I could not stand it anymore and did some this morning, I do LOVE my new Ventrac !

If you can get both ends open you could try blowing compressed air through the pipe to clean it out. I don't know how much rust you have but maybe the pipes don't need to be replaced.

Good idea there, but take it from me, the deposits that build up harden over time and there is no way any type of air pressure will dislodge the crud. You would basically have to use a sewer snake on a drill to loosen the stuff and unless you got it all out, then rinsed the pipe with a pressure washer, you would end up with the crud in all of your fixtures like faucets, etc. And as far as replacing existing galvanized pope with new, well, if you think copper pipe and fittings are expensive, you would FAINT when you saw what new galvanized costs. And because it's all imported now, I doubt if the quality is as good as the old stuff. One of the reasons old galvanized pipe is so strong and leak free is because of the extra thickness and sealing the deposits give....:laughing:

The air is a good idea, but there is no way air will touch it. I cleaned some of the fittings by putting them in a vice, with wire brush on a drill and they open up, but the inside is pitted with crud and rust.
Plastic is the only way to go and finding adapters is going to be the problem.... (don't want to tear out everything in the house) most of what we can see above the level of the tank is not as bad. The push and pull pipes to the cystern are the heavy black plastic and are clear.
I'm surprised at how much JR can still do ! He gets down in there and took some of it apart himself when I was not there. I believe we are going to need to cut the tank apart to get it out. That will mean ear plugs and a few metal cutting jig saw blades after drilling holes to get the blades started.
This is NOT going to be a fun job, but a plumber would cost a fortune !

HEY BK, CONGRATULATIONS on getting to be a true, certified MOWER ADDICT and reaching 1,000 posts. I also noticed you didn't make any fanfare about it like I would have. Figures, nice guys like you who take the time to help others don't toot their own horn the way guys like me do....

With a lot of reasons to get discouraged these days......I would like to thank you for helping your neighbor. This to me is a bright spot and I find it quite commendable. Makes we want to give you a hand, if I was closer I would.
Also remember not to overdo it in this heat, drink plenty of water, and wear a dust mask in that crawl space, some of that dust can be a real health hazard.
Is that tank a pressure tank or just a storage tank? Perhaps it would be easier to abandon most of the old system and replace with pvc and cpvc?
Just trying to help.

Thanks,
It's just the way I was raised, help when you can, someday you may need some help yourself.
I watch the heat and have a fan blowing in there.
It is a holding tank, not a pressure tank. We plan to replace everything we can get to with plastic or brass, replace the tank with a pressure tank, and get a new pump. Many of the pipes need to be re-routed so they are out of the way (that will be easy with plastic) JR did this all with galvanized and put them where they would fit with what he had on hand.
Just in case I didn't mention it..... Dad was "Robert Brown" too !

Front Porch -- AGAIN

Not that anyone is interested, but ..... update on neighbor's plumbing.
JR had a Jet pump (push / pull) at the house pulling water from the cistern.
We tried everything and the foot valve system kept getting plugged with the rust from the system and would not prime and pull. We ended up using one of the two pipes down to the cistern for an electric feed to a well pump suspended in the cistern. Jet pump was 3/4 Hp and the well pump only needs to be 1/2 Hp.
New Pressure Tank (old one required being cut in half to get it out) -- New plastic pipe for everything below the floor --- new plastic drain lines --- New Pump ---- Finally --- water in the house with more flow than he ever had before !
Side note ---- NOW that it is finished .... the temp outside is in the 60s this morning and it had been in the 90s all the time we were doing all that work.

Maybe now I can get to use my new Ventrac more -- also broke the dry spell last night and got about 1 1/2" of rain ! So .... now the grass will be needing more attention !

That's how it seems to work - when you're working like a dog, the su's there to bake you. When it's all done, it cools off!

How long was your dry spell?

Re: Front Porch

It had been a couple months since we had enough rain to make the rain gauge move any. Strange that the grass kept growing (not quite as fast, but more than you would think). Just a couple days ago, we got under 0.2" and 25 miles north they got over 7" in a couple hours . I don't want that much all at once, but it would be nice to get it over a few days . I'll settle for the 1 1/4" and more expected later in the week (if we can believe the weather people ).

Hope all the drama over language police is nearly over !

That would depend on a couple of members, BK.

I just won't stand for it, and I think I've made my case ubundantly clear, so I am done with it for the moment. Until these members come back to defend themselves.

We had a few weeks of dry, but it's broke now - broke about halfway through July. The weather sure is messed up all over the place. :frown:

Hey everyone it's been awhile!
That's awesome BK! I could have used your help when we replumbed our basement two weeks ago, but then again we went the easy route .
Changed all of the galvanized over to PEX. We had so much rust coming out of our pipes making the tub red and having to use rust out every week. We had put in an iron filter a few months ago and and it didn't help at all, then realized the water out of the softener was good, but it was the pipes causing all of the problems.

It was a long day, but it was the time to do it before we finished the basement, all of the pipes were easily accessible. Now our water is actually drinkable from the tap and our tub stays white!

Anyways, glad to see everyone again

Old galvanized pipes will always discolor the water, copper rarely builds up deposits enough to discolor the water.

Yea some of the pipes that we tore out had black stuff dripping out, ewwwww
Thought about copper, but it is so dang expensive and takes a lot more effort to install. A lot of plumbers have been going to pex and shark bites, so that is what we did and it worked great!

I was helping my brother and nephews with roofing all last week and was so tired upon getting home I didn't mow, and of course it rained all weekend....grrrrr.

About the "language police", what a stupid waste of time, making such a big frickin' deal about HTF I worded a thread. MORONS is too kind a word to describe them and their ilk. CRETINS may be a better term. I personally don't give a flying, flipping, BLEEP what words are posted on this or any other forum. I am a big boy, I have been called names that would make a sailor blush, a little cussing isn't going to make me avert my eyes and babble "Oh, you can't say that HERE" because it's not my place to censor LMF.

I personally don't care how you word anything, but I always try to respect other people and their wishes, but I think this situation is different.

If I am in a situation with someone where they don't have the choice/option to move away and I'm cussing up a storm and they would prefer me not to do that, then I would want to respect their requests. If a parent wants me to not say any vulgarities around their child, then so be it, they have the right to ask me to stop and I should respect their request.
In the case of LMF, every person has the right to read or not to read a specific topic. If it offends you, then don't read it! It is not as if every thread on LMF is full of vulgarities and most of the words are "bad" because YOU make them bad. My wifes parents used to not allow them to say "poop", it was then seen as bad in the kids eyes because their parents made it that way. Growing up around a lot of farmers, they all say s_ _ _ for manure and it is a correct term. Nothing wrong with it, it is a part of their vocabulary and that is what they use. This goes with every other word. I grew up in a "clean" home where we didn't use any swear words, but I have no problems with it. Going to college there were home schooled kids who were so sheltered that they would leave a class when the topic of sex (made them uncomfortable) would come up or if people would swear. Ridiculous in my mind, but whatever. We all have different ways we use words, but we all have choice. So if you are offended, I apologize once, will try to be more conscious of it, but you can leave or not read my posts if you have a problem with it. You can not partake in using "bad" language, you don't have to agree with it, but you CAN accept it and move on.

Overall the threads on LMF are very clean, very well maintained and the members of LMF are a great group. Don't put a black mark on it because you can't learn to accept the diverse opinions and backgrounds of its members.
