My 16hp briggs engine on a simplicity 7116 quits running after warming up. About 4-5 minutes and then will not turn over. After cooling down it will start up and do the same thing. What do I look for?

Post the model number information from the engine tag so we know what engine you have. And when you say doesn't turn over do you mean cranks but not start or not do anything.

Model 326437 At first it would not crank. I have let it sit for a month while I was out of town and just tried to start. It cranks but sounds terrible and will not start.

Welcome to the best mower forum on the interscreen.

Air, fuel, spark at the right time and compression are required.

1.Fuel cap venting. Hardly ever the cause.
2.Lack of fuel delivery or dirty carb. Trash in the fuel tank outlet normally covers your main complaint.
3.Stripped flywheel key.
4.Water in the gas.
5.Gas can with no spout passing trash, dirt, grit, leaves, bugs and water to the mower tank.
6.Fouled plug/s.
7.Valves way out of spec. As in loose rocker arms and so on.

Most of the time posts like this are number 2 above.

Most common cause for this problem is a coil with a hot short or hot open. Next time it happens check for spark. No spark, I’d be replacing the coil.

Don't have rocker arms it is not an over head valve head engine

Have you checked for a rodent nest under the shrouds that caused the engine to overheat and damage the engine? Does the "awful" noise seem to be coming from the starter or internal engine noise? Did you overheat the starter from excessive cranking when trying to get it started? Have you removed and cleaned the carburetor and flushed the fuel lines with fresh fuel while checking that fuel is flowing freely from the tank to the carb? These are my first thoughts based on your description of symptoms.

I have read most but fail to find "Check the oil"!!!! And a few posts will not reveal the root cause. A few have good feedback. I guess even this post might be of little value. Words can be misleading. When it trys to crank, are cables hot, what is battery voltage, is starter hot, how does this change from when it quits and will not crank. We need to separate a failure to crank caused by external factors or internal failures.
