Keep in mind that hydro fluid is hotter than engine oil.
I'm all ears. Please explain.

A fluid is a fluid is a fluid. The additive pack in motor oil or even the base of it will reach the same temp in said system as regular hydro oil. What did I miss? Thin or viscous at 212F is just that.

I have just replaced the stinking mess (oil) that came out if a Tuff Torq K46 V with full synthetic, Penrite HPR 10, 10W-50 motor oil. No word from the customer at this time but hope it will give the, 30+ year old , mower a few more operating hours.

Both Tuff Torq and Hydro Gear recommend 15-50 or 20w50 full synthetic API-certified oil for their sealed units. Personally, I use Mobil 1, but any brand-name oil, such as Pennzoil Platinum, Rotella, etc., is fine. Wheel Horse, Cub Cadet, early Bolens, etc., with the Sunstrand or Eaton pumps, use 10W30 synthetic or conventional. I use what the manufacturer's recommend; they are the ones that engineered and tested the units. If you are uncertain, simply call the company and ask them what they recommend.

Change the oil and go for a Full synthetic 20w/50 and it will be as sweet as a nut for another 100 hours then do it again , you and the hydro will love it and the hydro will last a long time

Do the Forum members think there is any benefit in changing the hydrodrive/transmission oil on a Toro Wheel Horse 17 hp?
(FYI mower performs very well but in the past I have had a hydraulic transmission fail & have always wondered if a timely oil change might have extended its working life)

Should the consensus be, it would be beneficial to do this - any thoughts on best oil for the job?

I realise that this may require the transmission/transaxle being removed from the mower, as there does not seem to be any provision for draining the old oil.

You might want to pick up a suction hand- pump canister to make that oil extraction way easier. Surely beats the alternative! I'm sure you can find one any number of sources, but I bought mine several years ago from the DR Field and Brush Mower folks back when I owned one. It's the kind of tool like a faucet wrench - it lays there and gathers dust until you need it. Then, one day, you need it!!!
