I circled the area I want you to check. It looks like your engine has those valve buttons/caps on the end of them. Look and make sure you haven't lost one.

I noticed there was was a total lack of oil in around the lifters

Here are his last 2 pics.
Do you have a set of feeler gauges?
Turn the engine by hand while watching the action of the valves. Watch both rocker arms and see if they travel @ the same distance when moving. One of them might not move much.

Just so I will know tomorrow. What is the clearance that I should be looking for and setting?

Hi Fish, this is RLM20001 I checked the movement of the valves, the top valve is moving 11.49 mm (.453 in) the bottom valve is moving 11.37 mm or (.447 in) the piston moves approximately 88.61 mm or (3.89 in)
With the plug-in and turning by hand, it seems to have the most compression when both valves were closed.
