Any cigar smokers?

Just curious. I've had some very tasty sticks lately, and wondered what others like.

No, but I do the much more politically incorrect thing...I smoke cigarettes! That's akin to kicking three-legged dogs and tripping old ladies as they cross the street these days, isn't it?

I'll still do it if it kills me.

Now THAT'S what I call tenacious! I feel the exact same way. Why prolong the inevitable? I say life's too short - live it up!

When I was in my late 20's I smoked dope, my mother found out and she told me quote:

"Everybody needs a crutch". Well she was a heavy smoker from age 20 to age 72 and it finally killled her. She told me she really enjoyed smoking but she had a LOT, and I mean a LOT, of smoking related illnesses that handicapped her from age 45 until her death. I never understood why anybody would enjoy THAT.

But to all, enjoy your vices, everybody needs a crutch.... Mine is a glass of Zinfandel to wash down my dinners.

I generally wash my dinner down with a glass of wine or beer also. And I like to take my dinners gradually over a period of about 10 hours beginning at noon...

I probably would, but everywhere I turn, some do-gooder (not referring to you here, Kenny) is trying to force me to quit. Ain't gonna happen like that. Just makes me more stubborn. If people left me the heck alone about it, I'd have quit on my own years ago.

So, I will keep doing it, out of spite (but, mainly because I enjoy it).

Well, we're all gonna die, and few ways to are pleasant..........to think if I just quit, eat right, pray every day and don't swear anymore, I'll die in my sleep at the ripe old age of 172. Odds of that happening? You know.

I'll just do whatever........to paraphrase Dennis Leary on the subject..........'to worry about your health so you'll live forever.....and then be hit by a bus at 38'.

Sorry man - that's just plain wrong.

Alright then, rock on..

I lost two very close, young family members recently. Both were absolute models of healthy living. No smoking. No drinking. Healthy foods. Maintained their ideal body weight. Exercised regularly.

Bottom line - you never know. You can do everything right and die young. You can do everything "wrong" and live a long time.

I think the best advice is "everything in moderation".

That's funny....
OK, So I guess we can all make the lifstyle choices we choose too, the best thing about this country, not that I'm getting political.
Back to the topic....
I smoked 858's for years before the cigar craze kicked in about 10-12 years ago. Then it became difficult to get ones you wanted so you always ended up smoking something you didn't really like and spending way to much for it.
I could get a box of 858's for 15$ back in the day. A cedar box, not a cedar lined box, a solid cedar box, there's 20 cigars in a box. Now it's a little over a hundred, and those are far from the best. So, I haven't lit a cigar in years. I don't even accept them as a gift anymore.
Back off the topic....
Troegs nugget nectar? That's a stupid name for a beer!
Where can I get some?
I have never heard of it and I'm a beer lover(everything in moderation....these days anyway). I looked it up at one of the websites I use to learn about beer and it has an exceptionally high rating, so I need to find some.
Tröegs Nugget Nectar - Tröegs Brewing Company - Harrisburg, PA - BeerAdvocate
Thanks for the tip, I suggest you try one called "Spaten Optimal", came across it a couple of weeks ago and I like it.

Alright! Now that's what I wanted to talk about!

I started on cigars about 5 years ago, so guess I don't know any better :ashamed: But you're right that the prices these days are crazy. And I find that the more you pay, the worse the product. I buy a box of cigars and it's over $100, and since I smoke one per evening it lasts less than a month. But I recently had a couple that were just excellent:

H. Upmann Edicion Limitada 1844 (mild, great flavor and draw)
Liga Privada T52 (short smoke, very rich and tasty)

For regular everyday I smoke La Gloria, which are very tasty and reasonably priced.

It's funny about Nugget Nectar - I never thought about the name but everytime I mention it to someone they have the same reaction - that's just WRONG! But the name refers to the HOPS - the picture on the label shows a fist holding a cluster of hops. Anyway, it's very tasty - slightly sweet with a nice bite of hops.

Glad to find another Beer Advocate lover. Here in the DC area there are so many places to find great beers on tap or cask. They all broadcast their taps via twitter, and I use Beer Advocate to see which ones are worth checking out.

I will definitely keep an eye out for Spaten Optimal. The beer store I frequent has a large selection of Spaten. That's an "old school" beer from Munich, which is probably why they resisted the urge to call it "Spaten Hoptimal", which seems to be the trend lately. Thanks for the tip...

Sometimes I wonder if the so called "sin taxes" on items like alcohol and tobacco have any effect on reducung the use of such products. With sales taxes, I spend about $14 every two weeks on my nightly glass of zinfandel...which may sound like a lot, but the daily newspaper here which can be read in five minutes costs 75 cents....

To tell you the truth it is already growing. 1 giant bush of Nicotiana Rustica. Its leafs can contain up to 9% nicotine when common tobacco is 1 to 3 %. still working on drying b/c first smoke was a bit harsh:licking:. I also have to be careful not to smoke too much or it makes you see things from too much nicotine:thumbdown:. next time I will grow another strain.

Here in Texas it grows big all year, but it smells like a semi that has had 2,000,000 heavily smoked miles

I think that's great, very resourceful on your part. I don't smoke and I'm not suggesting that smoking is a good thing. If you have a nictine addiction you may as well take control of the implications. I would be interested in knowing what the results of your work will turn out to be.
Tobacco is one of the oldest vices we have as a civilization, it can't be too hard to figure out why. Soon you may have the best homegrown tobacco around, if for no other reason than no one else is growing it. Your research and developemet will no doubt become quit valuable in the near future. Just remember that there is a huge liability attached.

The U.S. was literally built on tobacco - it was our first cash crop. When I drive around Southern Maryland I love to see the tobacco curing in the barns.

What's with this? "Sordid"? "Vices"? Overeating and becoming so sloppy and huge you can't even occupy just one seat on an airplane is a 'vice', too.....but I don't see these people being sanctemoniously crucified at every turn, on everyone's lips.......BAH! We also built this country on slavery. Now that's something to hang your head in shame about.

Tonight I took the older kids out for dinner at a local tap house. Before dinner we had a Bear Republic Ryevalry - very tasty. With dinner we had a Victory Golden Monkey - excellent. Both on draft.

After I got home I went out to the shop and fiddled with the string trimmer. Had a Brewer's Art Resurrection Ale - in a CAN (cans are making a comeback!)

ok, writing this it sounds like a lot, but the tap house selections were tulip glasses .

Anyway, in the shop I fired up a Liga Privada T52 (Nicaragua). If I had a roach clip I'd have used it

I haven't seen the Surgeon General's warnings at McDonald's yet.......or on candy bars.......or chips, dip, butter, bacon, doughnuts, sugar, etc. I also don't see the checkout clerk looking at your wasteline, and charging you a 500% upcharge in taxes because you obviously don't need the food in your cart for survival.

No, fat people have a long row to hoe when it comes to being persecuted for their "vice".

I do believe that nutrition labeling was so people knew WHAT was in their food......so it was harder for the big businesses that produce garbage to promote their offerings as "healthy".

The point isn't that I want these laws....the point is, where will it stop? What will be the next scapegoat as to all our ills? Who will be the next one to pay for their 'vice'? Who doesn't have one? If you think you don't.....then PRIDE is your vice........

In case I haven't made it blatently obvious by now - I'm not a big fan of society myself. It is a needed evil, one that I have as little to do with as possible. I don't fit into it, and that's alright by me.

......PS ... I think I've sidetracked this thread far enough... back to the OP question... seems to be very few....

Don't take credit for MY sidetracking..........I am the one that brought Cigarettes (is that word profanity yet?) into the mix......

As to the OP's original topic. I have smoked a few....I like the smaller, half-inchers......usually with wooden sugar-sweetened tips.......they are all I can stand.....did smoke a pipe for a long time though. I LOVE the smell of pipe tobacco! Lit or not.....I even love the way it makes a constant pipe-smoker's car smell. I loved Captain Black Gold, myself. I mixed my own a few times, wasn't as good as I thought it's be. Love the sweet-sour taste of pipe smoke, too.....think I'll find me a pipe again.

We, in our town, had this cool old newsroom - they sold newspapers, comics, cigarettes, cigars, and they had glass jars of all kinds of tobacco to mix your own pipesmoke. I had a humidor, and the like. That place was so cool. He was an old guy, and he'd saved all the advertising from every cigarette brand he ever sold. Had the best ones hanging up......also had a huge carved wooden Indian to greet you at the door. But, the place was so tiny! I so miss it.

It was so cool....they had lottery there, too....and all the old guys would just sit there and BS and talk about the old days......it was truly like no other store I've ever been in. All the while, you could smoke away....how I miss it. Did I mention that? When you went in there, the guy'd put his elbows on the counter and just gab as long as you want, if it was a slow day.

BTW....just ordered a pipe...... Gonna get me a pouch of CB gold for it. I don't know why I stopped. I actually liked the ritual of caring for the pipe. Probably, if you're gonna smoke a pipe, it takes a commitment. Like cigars, there is no quickie drag on a pipe. Unless it's another kind of pipe, but that ain't my thing at all.

The name of the shop was 'Humidor News'......if that tells you the kinda place it was.....just great for a tobacco lover.
