317 won't turn over

My 317 won't turn over all that i hear is the solenoid click and that's it i'm getting about 13 volts at the post on the starter. Im pretty sure its the starter but would john deere have all the parts to rebuild it or should i buy a new one.

You don't say the make and model numbers of the engine. That would help us a lot. I have rebuilt starters for year and sometimes it is cheaper to replace. Have you tried jumping directly to the starter. If the starter spins the engine over when jumping, you may have a bad solenoid or are losing power due to bad wires or ground.

The 317 should have a Kohler KT17 engine. Make sure that you have good connections on both ends of the ground wire. If after jumping directly to the starter and it still doesn't crank the engine then I would replace the starter.

It is a 317 with a 18 hp kohler magnum heres the numbers

Today i ran a wire from the negative post on the battery to the motor mount and another wire from positive post to the post on the starter and it would not turn over.
And i also engaged the pto after i did this and was able to turn the motor by hand.

The brushes will be a Kohler part. You will be able to see it when you open the starter up. Have you ever done this before? Putting the starter back together is not easy and you may want to have a mechanic do this job.

Not sure if this could be it, but I had a 318 that would occasionally not return (pull them back off the flywheel) the starter gears that engaged the flywheel.

The solenoid kept the gears engaged with the flywheel. I found that the solenoid/starter shaft needed some lube and once that moved freely the problem went away for a while.

The 317 / 318 are great tractors and if I did not need 4WD and lower center of gravity for my hills - I would probably still have that tractor.

Hope you don't need a new starter - they are not fun to work on in that tractor.
