Honda GXV 160 Engine Hard to Start

There is a black (at least it appears to be) Phillips screw facing front of engine. Mixture? It is running rich, pulled plug and it was black.

Honda GXV 160 Engine Hard to Start

I bought a new GXV 160 last year year and installed it on my old Snapper Chassis (2001ish). I am having a hard time starting, getting much worse. Plug and Filter are new. The Choke is basically the last 1/4" or so of the throttle, and does not seem to help much. Any adjustments that I can make?

    Need new mower

My Snapper Deck did outlast the engine, and the Snapper drive unit is dirt cheap and easy to repair/rebuild if ever needed. 20 years ago, when I was researching self propelled mowers to replace my Lawnboy Silver Series, I was looking at Honda/Snapper/Toro among others. I called all the repair...

Snapper Ninja Disc Bearing 21" Mower

Yes, there is another bearing on the other end of that "hex" shaft, that's held on by a o-ring and bracket. I'd replace that one (bearing/bracket/o-ring) as well, as that bracket also wears out causing the shaft to sit crooked. The bracket has a lip on it that centers the bearing and hex shaft...

Dave, Sent you email with pictures. I have the bearing that you need (#35 in diagram part 707608), ended up with several extra's when I rebuilt my drive unit, send me your address and I'll send you one free...

Snapper Ninja Disc Bearing 21" Mower

Yes, I just rebuilt my entire Drive Unit on a 2000 P216012. From what I can see, you need a new bearing (35), 4 screws that secure the bearing, and the "C" (34) clip. The bearing is installed on the inside of (31), and it has a flange on it that allows the 4 screws to hold the bearing onto the...

One of my frontline snappers back in action, Honda GXV160

That looks really good. Did the same thing to my 2000(year) P216012 21" after the 20yr old Briggs started to knock, I installed the same engine. I replaced all the bearings/bushings/belts, and the Drive plate in the drive system as well. I had to cut approx 1 inch off the Thrust Plate to clear...

Looking to repower my Snapper with GXV160

I made two changes, engine and blade. Now, only takes one pass for a clean cut. The Briggs was choking on some of the grass, and the Honda did not, but the Briggs was 20yrs old. I'll make a few more cuts to get a better feel, then put the Ninja blade back on. This should give me a better idea if...

Thanks for the update. Yeah full on the Honda is approx 20oz, so I was a little over half with having 12oz in it. I know the Briggs that I had was a tough engine, hopefully the Honda is the same....

    Stupid Mistake

After using a Briggs engine for the last 20years, where by Owner Manual Process to ck oil, you remove, then fully insert dipstick and screw to lock, then remove to ck the oil, I followed the same process with my new Honda GXV160 engine, which resulted in running the engine first time with...

Can one really overfill the oil in this Honda lawnmower ?

Well shit. Installed brand new GXV160 Engine on 2000 Snapper. Added oil, approx 12 ounces, and dipstick showed full, as I screwed the dipstick in to ck the oil. Cut my grass. Now, reading this I see you are not supposed to screw the dipstick in when checking, which now allows another 7-8 ounces...

Looking to repower my Snapper with GXV160

Got it running today and cut the yard. Very quiet/smooth engine as expected. Installed the Oregon 121 Blade, excellent cut, and only had to make one pass. With the Briggs and Ninja blade I was making two passes each time to get a good cut. The Briggs was old and getting to the point where it...

Trimming Thrust Plate for GXV160 install.

Update: Looks like they changed the design of the drive unit, which resulted in lowering the Thrust Plate relative to the deck approx 1/4". Snapper also trimmed the top of the Thrust Plate back approx 1/2 just like I had planned to cut. I have a newer Snapper, bought around 2010 to use on my...

Trimming Thrust Plate for GXV160 install.

Installing GXV160 on a P216012. Two Questions: 1) Even with 1/4 spacer, the gas tank is still touching the edge of the Thrust Plate (Item # 21, Part#7035477 in diagram below.). I'd like to trim approx 1/2 back on the top of the Thrust Plate. Will not affect the structural integrity of the...

    Chain case gasket

not sure what you consider service life but they leak after a year or two. The “Right Stuff” no leakss. I quit using cork gaskets 20 years ago. Been using Right Stuff or Black RTV for the last 20 years in place of cork (on old English cars) If the surfaces are machined, I use thin paper and/or...

Looking to repower my Snapper with GXV160

So I've ordered all the parts to install the GXV160, as well as replacing bearings in the drive system and wheels and a few other worn out parts. Should be here in a week or two as some were not in stock, so while waiting on parts I decided to clean up the deck a bit. Deck is in pretty decent...

    Chain case gasket

I have a few old land rovers among a few other (hobby) cars to keep my life nice and stressed. They use cork gaskets from the factory for the oil pan, which dry up and leak. The latest update is to not use the cork gasket, and use RTV (I use Right Stuff), running a nice bead around the oil pan...

Looking to repower my Snapper with GXV160

I thought about that, but adding washers will create air-gap between engine and deck for stuff to blow thru. I don't mind buying the spacer.

Looking to repower my Snapper with GXV160

That is exactly what I have determined. I ordered the GXV160UH2A12. Stepped Crank (1" down to 7/8"). With the engine raised up with the spacer, from the diagrams, Snapper added three washers between the Blade Hub and the Crank to lower the Blade Hub to compensate for the deck spacer raising the...

Best mulching setup for Snapper 21" mowers

Hopefully in the next two weeks, as it's a bit of a guessing game on all the parts I'll need to make it work correctly. I'll definitely keep you updated on how it cuts with the various changes, as I've got a pretty good/consistent baseline from which to compare.

Best mulching setup for Snapper 21" mowers

I really don’t have anything to compare as that’s all I’ve used on current yard for the last 16 years. I’ll do the comparisons once I get the Honda running.

Looking to repower my Snapper with GXV160

The Briggs actually lasted 20years with no real maint and running low in oil a few times so I’d have to say it was darn good engine. I just always liked the design of the GXV and the overall “tone” of the honda engines so I’ve been wanting to try one for the last few years. The Briggs really...

Best mulching setup for Snapper 21" mowers

Right now (2000, P216012 HiVac), I have the Ninja Blade with the bag shoot attached, but it has the plug in it. Anyone put Honda engines on their Snapper?

I know this is an old thread, but I've spent the last several days researching the Honda engines (GX and GS) that will work. I have a Snapper P216012, Model year 2000, that came with a Briggs (12H802-2611-B1). The shaft is 3.15 (80.1mm) Long, 1.0" (25.4) Diameter, with a 3/8 x 24UNF Tap. The...

Looking to repower my Snapper with GXV160

I found a version of the GSV190 that may work, so I ordered a GSV190 and a GXV160 from Northern Tool today. I’ll see which one is easier to install and send back the other. I hit all of the online parts houses to figure out crank pulley and key, and the blade hub. Found Snapper models that use...

Looking to repower my Snapper with GXV160

Never got around to doing this as I made it thru 2 more years wit the Briggs, but the rod's knocking now so looks like I need to do this. Has anyone installed a GXV or GSV on a Snapper HiVac? I am now leaning towards The GSV.

Looking to repower my Snapper with GXV160

I have a 2000 Snapper HiVac, model P216012 with a tired Briggs 6.0 consumer engine. I want to repower with the Honda GXV160, and see there are several different variants of that engine. I found one at Northern Tool, (GXV-160-UH2-A12) for $369, but it has a tappered 1 > 7/8 shaft. The GXV that...
