craftman lawn and garden versus drive belt

The more I read this the more confused I get....wish you would post pics...I cannot imagine a new belt just breaking if there is no sign of abrasion or getting caught on something. Even if a pully is locked up and not turning the belt should at least smoke as it wears before breaking....:confused2:

Get a good quality belt, Kevlar.... You may need to take the broken belt to an industrial supply to get it crossed...

When you engage the PTO drive are you letting the engine run at or near idle speed???
There are a lot of people that think it's ok to engage mower decks at any engine RPM... it is not good for belts or pulleys, blade spindles or engines...

thank you for replying. seriously. found that the pulleys were out of alignment and the belt was running into sharp "L". did some modifications. bought good belts for all. after a couple of breaks and more adjustments i was riding and cutting away. even came up with a deck roller at lowes with a little creativity. the engine was still running rough. and i was using a lot of gas. so thought it might be the governor or carb. i cleaned the carberator. still was going through gas since i could only get it to run smooth by leaving the choke open. until i could figure out that problem. put new spark plugs in yesterday. riding along the lake the craftsman had a back fire that caused the neighborhood to take cover. and she died on the spot. tried restarting. it cranked but wouldn't fire. ??? checked the spark plugs they were still in - but there was no spark. there is a 30 amp fuse, it looks still good but i'll change it. could there be a safety switch problem that is causing it not to send juice to the engine. i see them behind the dash... running fine then had to pull it up the hill with a toll. everyone has been so helpful. and i keep trying to get this girl cutting. i've spent alot of time and money, but don't want to quit. the starter was fine - what in the ignition could be stopping the spark to travel on down to the engine. good morning everyone

There may be an 'operator present', safety switch under the seat..if it intermittently fails... it can cause a backfire and keep it from starting...

If you look under the seat you should find a connector on wires going into the seat... disconnect that connector and place a jumper in the tractor side of that connector, this will allow you a check out to determine if that seat switch is causing your problem...:smile:KennyV

tried jumper wire but that didn't work. got some softer wire today and i'm going to try again. going to look at deck switch.....

Some do some dont if i engage mine at low idle they told me at sears it would throw the deck belt, and sure enough i tried it, and it did...

Could the key way have sherred? and thats causing it not to fire? Help Craftsman lawnmower owners

Put a new wiring harness on it. looked like the mice had chewed away. that wasn't the problem either. still cranks but will not turn over. battery is fully charged. tried the seat wire didn't do it. i'm back to scratching my head. any other suggestions aside from buying a new riding mower. feel like this one is almost rebuilt from ground up.
