Yardman put their name on about 50 different models and the technicians on this site hate guessing. You need to post the model and serial numbers if you want help. Look under the seat for theID tag.

See if this applies. If not then we will need the actual model number starting with 13 to give better assistance

I checked under the seat, no identifiers there. Ilengine, there is a notice under the hood that matches the photo you posted. I haven't tried following the advice given, yet, but will do so in the morning and let you know. Is it possible for me to post a photo to this forum, or am I too "raw" at this point to do so, and would a photo even help? Ilengine, thank you for your response.

If this helps, I found the manual for my machine. The manual covers models 13565 and 13607, so far not able to figure out which model I have, although I know it has a 12 HP B&S engine. The transmission design doesn't click into gears when you change gear selections. The loose or slipped belt seems like a good possibility. Will get it out into the sunshine after the sun comes up so that I can have a good look underneath. Would be great if a slipped belt is all it was. As always, thanks for your assistance. My property is loaded with trees, and, this time of year, my yard is loaded with fallen leaves. I completed the front using a Toro 22" walk-behind which is "self-propelled", but emptying the bag into a wagon, pulling the wagon to the back of my property to dump it over and over is wearing on this 74 year-old body. Worked at it all day yesterday. Finished the front, but that's the smallest part of my lawn. Riding is a piece of cake. Thanks again for your help.

Looks like there is a 13565-7 and 13565-8 which is the 1987 or 1988 model year of the 40 inch deck. Also there is a 13607-7 which is a 1987 version with 38 inch deck. Picture of the mower and any engine model number information from the engine itself would narrow down the possible years and models.

Hint all these model uses the CVT transaxle system. If the OP can the transaxle large pulley have raise the drive wheels of the ground and with someone watching the pulley engage the drive if it is a belt problem or a belt idler pulley, the main pulley won't turn; otherwise either the shifter linkage is disconnected or there is an internal problem with single speed transaxle.
