Do any of you guys know of a source to buy a pretty large sun hat that can be work with a Worktunes headphone? I love my Worktunes but need more sun protection than a regular baseball type cap. Anybody got an idea where I can find such a product?

A boonie hat you can snap up the sides so your headphones can fit over it. Seeing as how you are from L.A. (Lower Alabama) I thought you might like this style. Either that or get any wide brimmed hat and lay the headphones around the back of your neck.

I bought mine at a feed store, wide brim, straw hat.
I don' know what work tunes are, but you may need a chin strap to hold your hat on if it accomodates this device. I think that would "cut in" to my "comfort level".
What about ear buds and a mp3 player for hot weather?

Worktunes are headphones for noise suppression that may incorporate a radio and/or mp3 player. I prefer a straw hat also but they don't work with headphones, earbuds yes.

This is my straw hat. I like the tinted brim and it's cool.:cool:

I really enjoy my Work tunes. I worked a lot of years in a factory setting and am blessed to have as much hearing left as I do. I attribute that to wearing hearing protection as much as I could. Running a mower or trimmer or blower I still try yo wear it as much as possible and being able to listen to the radio makes for a better day.

Since I started this thread this is what I came up with. It is not real fashionable but I believe it will work great if the hat brim is big enough. It is supposed to be an ideal sun hat. It was given to me several years by an old surveyor that had retired and had several of them.image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

What y'all think?

That looks like a plastic hardhat so I am assuming that it has a suspension attached within. If that is the case than the headband of your Worktunes can fit under the hat and between it and the hardhat suspension, thus only requiring a hole for the antenna. If there is no suspension within it I do not see how it would be very comfortable or able to remain on your head. Other than the hardhat being heavier, it will be possibly more safe for you to wear and the vents on the side should make it cooler. Let us know how it works for you.

It has a lightweight suspension inside that comfortably fits over the headset. I took two small zip ties and connected the hat to the headset on the Worktunes and cut a small hole for the antenna to go through. It is very lightweight. Because it is connected to the headset on the headphones it stays on even when I bend over with my head upside down.

It's apparent he's not concerned with that...
Looks to be the solution to me.
You might want to find out where you can get those hats and start another business, selling hats that offer both ear and sun protection. Have the head phones designed (speakers) with a jack that will plug into an I-pod or mp player.
The antenna can be added should someone want the radio function.

All right here it is. It is incredibly comfortable although I have not worn it to work. It actually feels better than wearing it over a ball cap.

I actually messaged 3M and suggested that they start making something similar for the Lawn Industry. They didn't respond.

OK, you guys have given me an idea for listening to tunes while I mow. For exercise, I swim at the local YMCA's indoor pool and found out about a device called H2O Audio(now called X-1 Interval) that has an iPod Shuffle inside a waterproof enclosure(good to 12 feet deep) as well as waterproof earplugs. It goes through the swim goggles strap and sits on the back of your head with the earplugs on about 6-7" cords to reach your ears. The enclosure has waterproof buttons for volume up/down and next/previous song and you just reach behind your head and feel them out to use those controls. It is GREAT for listening to tunes while swimming and I don't see why I can't run the adjustment strap on the back of a baseball cap through this device and use it mowing. I bought a Gravely sunshade for my ZTR to keep the sun off me, so I don't really even need a cap for sun protection. I'm posting a picture of the Gravely sunshade and the iPod device below....let me know what you guys think!!

I think the shade looks nice but honestly I probably would tear it off within the first few hours I run. I cut around too many bushes and limbs..........

jekjr,
Yeah, the Sunshade is not really appropriate for a lawn care pro(for the reason you mentioned as well as the time involved in removing and replacing it when you are driving to customer locations-it has a pretty explicit warning about "transporting" the ZTR on a trailer with the sunshade attached as I'm sure you can figure out why:0)
But even for a homeowner like me I really DO have to be a bit careful as I have two Mimosa trees with low-hanging branches that I have to mow around carefully. I had a Craftsman sunshade(was a very nice one too at about half the price I paid for the Gravely) on my 54" YS4500 Lawn Tractor. I mowed 6 years with that without an incident and two weeks before I took delivery of my Gravely, I hit one of the Mimosa's with it. Had to bend some things back in place, but I think my son will still be able to enjoy that mower for a few years(he has about two acres with absolutely no treees:0)

Yep thats the bad of those theres no way to fold them down or anything to mow around trees, or for transport.

There is a user on here (graydog) that has a sunshade for his mower that DOES fold down. I borrowed some of his pictures so I hope he doesn't mind. The first picture is of it up, the second is of it folded down. Also, DJ you will like this....the third picture shows the lights on his zero-turn.

lmf,
Yeah, I remember seeing that post by him in a thread some time ago. That's a really cool sunshade and I looked at some "square" halogens like he's got but it looked like mounting would require drilling large holes(they had a large threaded shaft that goes though a hole and is secured by a nut on the other side). I would have had to mount those on my ROPS, because my "plastic gas tanks" are where graydog's "metal fenders" are at. Some ZTR's may have a place on the sides like that for mounting, mine didn't.
