The John Deere 14SB silver deck mower is over 25 years old and I am seeking
an e-clip that will hold the metal drive gear on the transmission shaft. The snap
rings offered by John Deere will not stay on the shaft and the gear falls off in
the yard.
I don't remember where I got the e-clip for the other side but it stays on
the shaft, with no problem while mowing. A 1/2 inch e-clip is too small and
a 5/8 inch e-clip (which I purchased at Home Depot) will clip onto the shaft
but is loose and it fell off before I could even start mowing.
I am therefore wondering if a 9/16 inch e-clip is the right size. (I have
tried, unsuccessfully, to find a 9/16 inch e-clip at 6 stores locally
and also on the internet.)
Question: Does anyone on this forum with a John Deere 14SB walk-behind
self propelled mower, know if a 9/16 inch e-clip will fit the transmission
shaft outside of the washer on the metal gear (that drives the rear
wheel) and, if so, where to purchase such an e-clip in small quantities?
BTW, the woodruff key on the inside of the metal drive gear of the wheel
is a 1/2 inch by 1/8 inch thick key, which I found available at a local
hardware store.
