Where did I go wrong?

Did you install the oil slinger as it came new from Briggs?

You know you have to scrub the crap out of the bore after honing? HOT WATER and lots of soap. Get all that aluminum grit out of the bore. Not to mention stone grit left behind. Not just shoot brake cleaner in there and call it good. Clean as in HOSPITAL CLEAN. As Bertsmobileone used to say, clean as in CLEAN. I miss that guy........

You know you can take your used oil and slather it on the under side of the deck? Keeps it from rusting out.

All these "new" parts the correct part numbers?

Could of over honed now your ring gap is waaaay off. Did you check your ring gaps? With three or more hones your bore must be rockin' in the free world. Probably need an over sized piston and rings.

Did you install the rings, correctly on the piston?

Note here you can't use just any old stone nor can you use a flex hone.

First if the engine has an aluminum bore you must use a stone for aluminum.

Second using a flew only amplifies out of round and taper conditions.

Plus if the cylinder is worn over .005" either out of round or tapered or both it must go to .020" oversize and a new oversized piston and rings installed. And Briggs has gotten to where they don't offer a .020 over for some engines.

what oil are you using?" I run the mower one time to get it hot, stir things up, and then change the oil on a new engine. That is how I do it. Others may feel different.

Decided to put it back together for another round of failure and frustration. The rod and crank journal cleaned up good with some Scotchbrite. I probably over-exaggerated when I said it was scored. This time I got some plastigauge and checked the rod/crank clearance... .002 - perfect. So back together it goes once again. Does everything look good?
Looks to me a lot of small grit or trash in the oil and all over the parts.

Take an old painting tray. Old paint brush. EVERYONE should be using Diesel to clean parts. Wash the block and all the parts out super clean style. Reinstall and test. If you have the garage door open while doing this, CLOSE it. Wind blows and more trash will get inside. Turn off any fans in the work space.

Any time you open an engine, it is the same as an open heart surgery. Clean as in CLEAN.

Clean the block PRIOR to opening her up next time. Same as in a hospital.

Do you see that pan that wraps around the cylinder and cooling fins? Has one visible screw in the picture? About 2-3 inches wide? That pan needs to come OFF and clean under it. All the cooling fins should be spotless like a new engine.
