we had a clean room for the racing engines. As in special filtration etc.. I build engines on the work bench but the area is spotless when I am working there. My hands probably get washed a dozen times an afternoon while assembling. I feel everything for grit. It goes thru a safety Kleen parts washer, then compressed air, then hot soapy water, then hot clean water, then compress air again. And into plastic baggies if it is not being immediately used. I keep very clean towels to lay over top of it when I take a break.
If you are that clean with your engines, maybe something else is going on. I think it was Project farm or someone who recently did a program on testing what grit does to an engine. He bought four or five new engines, and added a little grit, swarf etc., to each engine. Then ran them until they dropped. The worst killer was the grit used in valve lapping compound.
