Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and to John Deere mowers. Hope I don't sound too naive. I was recently looking at a Craigslist ad and seen a John Deere mower at what I thought a good price. So I thought I would take a look at the mower. It looked okay and cut grass pretty good. The motor didn't smoke, tranny sounded good, and overall a descent mower. So I purchased it. Then I did a little research, something I should have done first!!! The mower model I purchased is a John Deere L120. It has a 20 hp motor, but all the information I have seen online is that mower came with a 22 hp motor?? However, there is a factory decal on the mower that states "L120 20hp V-Twin". In addition, it has a 50" deck. The mowers I see online come with a 48" deck. So does anyone know if I bought a machine that was cobbled together from a bunch of parts or if this is an older model that I haven't found information for on the internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 2003 John Deere L120 came with a CV40 Briggs & Stratton 20 HP engine. The mower deck is 50 in. overall width with a 48 in. cut. Doses it looked cobbled? If something is cobbled it will look that way.

Thanks for the feedback. No, the mower doesn't look like it was piece milled from parts. It is probably an original 2003. I just didn't find any information that pointed me to look farther back in time. Now with this information I can buy parts (maybe) for the mower. Again, I really do appreciate your help!

There should be an identification plate rivited to the chassis under the right hand guard.
This willhave the exact model & serial number of your mower.
The engine will have a set of numbers stamped into one of the rocker covers, or the vowel near the rocker cover.
The last number ( serial ) starts with the year of manufacture.
If it is the original engine the mower will be that year or the following year
