Scrap metal prices depend on gas prices. Right now regular gas is cheap at $3.25 per gallon. So scrap metal is $8.50 per 100 pound.

We pumped sand out of the river and sold it to mostly concret companies.
We still have one site left.

A few years ago there was 12 sites dredging sand out of the. Chattahoochee River around Atlanta now I think there are 3.

Some people go fishing or hunting to relax I like to sit on the river pumping sand.
It's very relaxing when things are running as they should.

It's one of them jobs if your bored your making money if your working hard your not making money.

Thanks for explaining that. I thought it was probably for navigation but I guess it's also a good way to get sand.

So that's 11 cents a pound.

220 a ton is not exactly the same as .11 per pound, at most scrap yards. If you have 3 and a half tons, for example, you get paid for 3 tons.

It would be .098 - steel scrap prices are quoted in long ton = 2,240 lbs.

When requesting price quotes from places always ask price per pound to avoid misunderstanding when you get to a yard with your material and find out the price is 10% less than you had calculated.

Have never been been quoted by the ton.
Always quoted by a 100 pounds.

My last quote was $13.50 per 100 pounds and $100 haul fee for the container.

This time last year it was $11.25 per 100

Scrap steel $245/ton, clean steel and cast $285/ton, dirty aluminum $340/ton and clean aluminum $395/ton. Prices change constantly, last fall we received $445/ton for clean aluminum.

The thing is how many people really bring a ton to the scrap yard?
I have never heard of getting quotes by the ton unless your a big company that scraps 10 tons a week.

If your going to scrap some old mowers and parts why would you ask what they pay per ton.

Last year I scraped over 60.000 pounds and got paid $11.25 for every 100 pounds. Not once did anyone say anything about tons.

Ya I don't know I don't take my metal to the scrap yard I leave it in a bucket in my alley with a "free" sign on it I have a guy who makes a living with scrap metal and me making 20 or so dollars is not a big deal but for him it might be one time I put out about 13 mower decks he stopped by the next day and left an envelope with 20 bucks in it on my shop door lol

I'm a bit surprised that the difference between steel and aluminum is so small. I would have thought that aluminum would be 3x or even 5x the price of steel.

But then I know nothing about the scrap business.

Maybe cost is why the new Ford F-150 pickup is going to be all aluminum body and bed as well as in the engine block and parts of the frame. A 500# to 700# weight savings which equates to better fuel economy and performance. There will still be questions of its structural integrity that only time will tell.

Is cast iron worth anything? I recently removed some cast iron drain pipes from my house. I'm remodeling a bathroom and most of the old stuff had to go.

It's incredibly heavy.
