I mowed my sisters lawn for her the other day. She lives in one of those places where everyone mows there lawn about the same day and in the same direction. I thought it was rather odd myself. What angle do you mow your lawn? Do you mow horizontally or vertically?

Mow on a diagonal and mess with their minds ! :laughing:

I try to use a different angle for every cut, It tends to make the " lines " a little less pronounced.
Vertical , horizontal and just about everything in between.

For the most part, horizontally. The front portion of my yard which is rather large and oddly shaped, I just mow. One of these days I think I'll make some crop circles:laughing:

I have attempted the fancier art work in the yards before and it does not turn out right. Then again I have done the same with trying to paint my home and that did not turn out right either. I leave it up to the fact that I am not an artsy type.

I mow at four different angles; E-W, N-S, & both diagonals. I can usually see the last three ways I've cut, so I can do it in all four ways! I feel like it's better for the grass to not go one direction all the time. ~~ grnspot110

I mow in circles, Zamboni style. But my neighbors don't care. The closest one is 500 ft away, behind a 150 foot stand of mature hardwoods.

I just start at one corner of my property and follow the property line and just keep mowing around until all the grass is cut.

I mow in four directions but not in straight lines, usually in an 'S'.
The curves make it more visually appealing. Try it sometime.

Diagonally, alternating every mowing.

To get this thread back to a more pleasant positive angle ... I have to agree that sweeping long s curves do add a visual dimension thats nice for a change. :smile:KennyV

Now that's my kind of neighborhood, some times I throw the clippings back on the grass to be mowed and re- mowed, that mulches it more, but most of the time I just keep going round and round until I'm finished.

I mow about 3 acres every week with all kinds of obstacles in the way. Rectangular orchards with rows of trees, round herb and blueberry patches, shrubs, curvy rock walls, a kidney shaped pond, you name it. I start at the outer perimeter and work my way inward. I use the "points of interest" to make differing paths of round, straight and curved. Sometimes I break up the larger areas for a change of scenery. Looks like a huge piece of artwork when I'm done. Just have fun mowing. I think it's therapeutic.

I mow at a 45% degree angle and I alternate each week. That is Northeast direction one week then Northwest direction the next week. I find this keeps the grass cut nicely and uniformly.

One of the negative aspects of residing in a subdivision that has a homeowners association. I don't live in a subdivision and the only person who tells me to mow the lawn if my wife. However, where I live the city does have an ordinance that says grass in your front yard can't be taller than 4 inches. A guy down the street thought he would challenge the ordinance (or irritate his neighbors) and heavily fertilized his front yard and didn't mow it for several months. The grass was about 3 foot tall with some really large stems. After receiving a letter from the city he had to pay for someone with a brush hog to cut his grass.

He showed them!

I mow the manicured portion of my property in no certain direction or angle.I really don't think it matters because it returns to a upright position after being cut anyway. I mow right at an acre and do it twice a week. It usually takes about a six-pack. :thumbsup:

I mow horizontally but my wife mows vertically. There is always a different direction going on in our yard. It is probably smart to just mow what ever direction the home owners association says too. There are positive things about being in a managed community and then there are annoying things.

I used to live in a neighborhood like that. But I used a Honda push mower back then. It always looked good no matter what direction I cut. I never paid any attention to what the neighbors were doing:laughing:
Now I have 5 acres in an area of upscale houses, and I still don't pay any attention to when or how the others are cut. I just cut whatever way feels right that week. I admit I do try some alternative directions sometimes, but with a pond in the middle, it messes with those strait lines.

You know. I rather like the look of having a few different angles used in one cut. I agree that it can really add depth and dimension to the yard.

I prefer the Master Sargent stripes with hash marks down to the ying-yang. I do it to piss off my neighbors who think they are so proper. Its just grass, eh!
