Thanks for the welcome.

I likely will be around, especially after I mow my lawn for the last time this year. :D

My deck needs some refreshing and I will be poking around the threads looking for ideas. I plan on stripping it down, cleaning it off, stripping the old paint (and built up gunk), and then priming, painting, and coating it. It should be good to go for next year.

Hello from Brechin Ontario, north of Toronto, East of Orillia, near Casino Rama to be specific

I don't check here often but I do enjoy looking around and getting some good ideas to keep my mowers running.
I do have a question regarding Gear Oil - I have a faily new to me 5 foot PTO 3pt hitch mower with an Oil reservoir that contains Gear Oil but when I check the level the other day the Oil is quite "milky" or discoloured - not clear. I have seen that Hydraulic Fluid will do this if water is getting in but I am not sure if it is the same. There is a machine screw on the top that may be letting in oil when it rain so I put thread tape on this.
Any suggestion are appreciated. I think I will change the Oil though, just to be sure.

Three point equipment is a little tough to drain, I put my large decks on edge with my front loader...
You might consider using a good synthetic gear lube ... It seems to tolerate the moisture better that gets pulled in due to heat/cool, expansion/contraction... :smile:KennyV

:drink:KennyV. I don't know about " The Best Beer" up here but I drink this one mostly. It is an Ontario beer which used to be brewed in Hamilton but they were bought out by Labatt's. I like dark beers with flavour and have a hard time when on your side of the border as most American lager beers don't appeal to my taste buds. I do however like MGD enough to drink it when in Fla. for winter holidays. Dave

Sinter klaas is dutch for "Saint Claus".He was a 'good' priest and got a medal from the pope and he made him a "Saint"...Catholic "man of the cloth" can't have a wife,..That is illigal(i guess they can have boyfriends ,...but no woman :frown:,...they are posed to stay virgin:eek:

With Santa out of the way(friggin crook ),that leaves Sinterklaas.

That's really interesting:thumbsup:..... we haven't worked out all those details here, or at least theres a lot more left to fantasy. Ah,we kids always got something anyway but only after they first scared the beejeezus outa us with threatening having santa's helpers come over to beat the piss outa us or put us in a sack for shipping out to the candy factory in spain:wink:.
When we were young kids and when santa( he's dressed like a bishop there, miter and staff and all) visited school the teacher gave him a book with the names of all kids and who had been good or bad, these were scary moments i tell ye when these black helpers held up the feared gunny sack.Sometimes they would put a hapless kid kicking and screaming and begging for dear life in the sack and cart him off to the principals office.
i tell ye that poor kid would be pretty meek for a long while,Actually the whole class would be quiet for a couple days...Today it would be seen as child abuse:smile:

That is fascinating,
That's the kind of thing that makes sifting through the BS here worth it. Learning about another culture 1000's of miles away is very valuable to me. I like to know how other peoples live and what they experience, I suppose that's why I post the pics, and I want to see others pictures. There is so much information there (in a picture).

Don't tell anybody, but I really don't care much about what kind of mower you use, but I'm interested in why it's important to you.

I find it very interesting that this culture chooses to look at Santa this way and here we use the myth in another, almost contrary way.
Thanks for sharing that.

You're welcome.

Here is another tidbit of santa info that'll set all the clean freaks heading for the hills or the lysol bottle

There is a santa candy called "pepernoten" an hard dry spicecake the size of a Quarter,3/8" or so thick.
As the folklore goes, these candy's were made from recaltrant children.( talk about canibalisme eh )
Santa's helpers would throw bags full of these "nuts" all trough the classroom over the floor(clean or not). We kids would scramble like chickens over handfulls of corn on hands and knee's picking them up as many as we could and would munch on them all day long.:licking:
In these days nobody cared about bacteria or dirt, nobody ever got sick from eating them, just wiped the sand off on our pants if there was any.

My mowers are important to me cause i've got to cut friggin lawn!..my lawn is at least 3 acre
My mowers are also old(early seventies) and do occasionally give up the ghost usually when i am mowing. Thats is why i have 2 the same ones so i can hop on the other and finnish the job when the first one lets me down.I keep both of them running but i can also rob parts from one if need be.
I am a cheapskate and refuse to pay more than a couple hundred for any lawn tractor.
I been mowing with the same tractor for 16 years and plan to use them till i kick the bucket.

That's a good story

There's a proverb that states:"It takes a whole village to raise a child?"
Teaching a child accountability is important and I would think that this is a good way to do it. Compared to how children are raised, and the condition of some public schools and the children that are allowed to graduate, this sounds reasonable to me (except for the candy on the floor).
I'm imagining that the parents were satisfied with the means and methods as well as the results.
I wonder if anything like that still occurs and what the Sinterclaus story sounds like today in the Netherlands?

One can fool kids only so long with these fairytales, when the catch on they been had they usually rebel by saying "why did you lie about that", and,..i never believe you again!.
IMO,It underminds the credebillity of grown ups, sure not a smart thing to do.. i say.

But nowadays espessially in the bigger city's there are so many santa's kicking around that one can't fool even the very young kids for very long:wink:

The kids in Holland are nowadays just as confused and FF ed up as here.Drug's and crime are running rampant there too..Kids have no respect anymore for their elders as they used to have either.

There is such a tremendous influx of East Europians( mostly criminals) and Muslims(religeous fanatics) there it starts to tear the country apart:confused2:

The world is changing,..and IMO not for the better!.

I don't know how the schooling there is today,..When i grew up one could go after elimentairy school was finnished straight to trade schools to learn their trade of choice or go to middle school and then to college or whatever. High school as we have here did not exist back then. There was no requirement to stay in school till one was 18 either, and plenty kids that didn't like school were fulltime workers by the time they were 15 or 16. Learning on the job was very common and did do a better job on work ethics and abillity than keeping them in school were they are forced to learn stuff they never needed later in life.
Grades had to be passed or one had to do a year the second or a third time. There was no free ride.

What i find here,is that a lot of kids when they finnish high school still know dickall how to proceed in life, Cause they have not been thought how to work, something that need to be thought at a young age when they still can be motivated.
Nowadays at 18 or 19 yrs old they only know how to party, play video games and F the dog.
There is these days waaayy to much homework to do after school too,no wonder kids loose interest.

Looking forward to checking out and contributing to the site from a Toronto Outdoor Power Equipment Dealer's perspective.

Ask me anything you always wanted to ask your dealer, but didn't.
I've asked dealers what percentage profit they make on new equipment and how much on parts.
Ofcourse they never disclosed that, they only said,..not much.

I wonder if you have the guts to spill the beans:wink:
I ain't holding my breath though:laughing:

I also wonder when i wander in a JD dealership why the walls, shelves and floors are completely covered with toy tractors and such crap, but even simple parts for a tractor or implement needs to be ordered and can take weeks to get and when it does arive it is usually the wrong part:confused2:
Screw the farmer eh

#65

I will take a shot at answering your question, but no guarantee it will satisfy.

Historically, there was always greater ROI (return on investment) on the parts as opposed to the new equipment. No surprise there, however, it was also the case that historically models would not change as often and that there was many commonly used parts on the various models and even makes.

People would also keep their lawn mowers longer. There was no such thing as the disposable lawn mower 10 or 15 years ago as you see now. With the flood of Chinese sourced products the replacement part industry has really changed, people replacing the whole recoil rather than the spring, replacing the whole carb rather than rebuilding with a kit, or in some cases replacing the whole mower rather than even getting an estimate on the repair. Let's not even talk what this is doing to the landfills. This is not dissimilar from what happened to the appliance repair guys I guess. How many guys are repairing microwaves any more?

The above is all relevant to the answer because historically dealers could stock common fast moving parts and be assured that they would not be obsoleted quickly and that they would have certain rate of turnover to justify having the stock on hand.

Us personally, we still have a HUGE inventory of parts relative to our colleagues. It is costing us a fortune in space and capital being tied up and sitting on the shelf. What we are noticing in the industry is that many of the other dealers are moving towards drastically reducing their stock of parts on hand and a customer has to order individual parts for a repair or a special order with the corresponding delay.

The reason you may hear other dealers say "they don't make much" may be due to the fact that recently they have been having to eat more write downs on obsolete parts in their inventory. We didn't know how bad it was until we invested in the tracking software that essentially told us we are losing money with respect to some lines once you factor in the cost of the capital and real estate to be able to have stock on hand for the guy that comes in and wants the stuff right away (our landscaper customers ;).

The answer is also complicated by the fact that the number of manufacturers and the different rates of return on parts in general depending on the manufacturer. You also have different rates of return on parts by the same manufacturer (sometimes with no reason from our perspective).

In short, on fast moving stuff you can make 30% ROI but once you factor in all of the other costs related only to the parts, I can see why some dealers may say not much.

On new equipment, it really depends as well. You have got MRSL which may provide for 30% return, but I can tell you that no one is getting that up here. Like the car industry, the margins are now razor thin on the big stuff in highly competitive markets like Toronto. This year in Toronto the industry is coming off a winter that never came, so we are in it to make every sale Spring.

The other dynamic it has created is that because the competition is fierce in Toronto, we are seeing a lot more guys driving from 4 hours away to make their big purchases in the big City. I guess that is the power of the Internet at play as well.

Like I said, I probably didn't answer your question, firstly because there really is not one answer and secondly the times are a changin'

Cheers

I've asked dealers what percentage profit they make on new equipment and how much on parts.
Ofcourse they never disclosed that, they only said,..not much.

I wonder if you have the guts to spill the beans:wink:
I ain't holding my breath though:laughing:

I also wonder when i wander in a JD dealership why the walls, shelves and floors are completely covered with toy tractors and such crap, but even simple parts for a tractor or implement needs to be ordered and can take weeks to get and when it does arive it is usually the wrong part:confused2:
Screw the farmer eh

Yes,the throw away attitude only seems to get worse,replace,..don't fix.
A zillion models that do all the same thing,...mow grass.
Every model has its own parts that doesn't fit any other model.

I needed brushes for a big starter for one of my tractors. 8 brushes at $25 a piece..$200.
A new starter was $320,you go figure:confused2: guess what i bought.

This world is crazy.

Oh yeah ?
I question this....and everything !
Lets do some searching for the truth.
Sources ?
From my perspective, I think its better than ever..
So, this depends on where one is.
Why are people the way they seem to be ?
fanatics
criminals
why?
since I am neither (IMO), I do not know.
Ever speak with one of these ?
Have a good day, and converse.

Sources ?......my relatives, they live in Holland...

From my perspective, I think its better than ever..
So, this depends on where one is.....nope,your country is on the way to the crapper too,..you need to pull your head out of your behind and see what's happening all over the world........the devil is gaining the upperhand(his helper is in the WH)

Why are people the way they seem to be ?.....selfishness,greed,lack of love, despair, want things for free,jealousy,......you name it.

fanatics.....they are eiter brainwashed or have a mental problem IMO

criminals
why?
... ...they rather make $10 illegal than $20 in an honest way. They are to stupid to figger out being honest and work for what they want or need is much more agreeable and full filling.

since I am neither (IMO), I do not know.

Ever speak with one of these ?.....I have,...they think the world owes them everything for free.

Have a good day, and converse.

I am, more or less, an advocate of the cheapest possible repair/fix.
Things are changing, but is this anything new ?
Is this good or bad ?
As to the brushes.....are there other sources ?
Probably NOT, if one captures and controls that market and then waits for the demand....
I'm am sure its NOT a "new" starter but a restored one , using those $25 brushes (discounted 90%)..
I do not trust business as I do not know all the particulars and details of business, I only make "educated" guesses.

I think that the world is "crazy" as we really do not know all the whys and whens and whos....and those in their Ivory Towers are not about to release this info and data.

Well, Bison, I too have relatives in the Netherlands (Van der Goes)....They seem to have legal drugs, we have them illegal....
same bottom line ??
Have I spoken anything in truth ???
Also, even if I am American, I am not blind by this, I am the opposite of a tea-bagging conservative...

Hello fellow Albertan.
Don't hold your breath on learning here more than you know already about cutting grass. It ain't rocket science.
I tell you what i know about grass cutting
There's 600 models wheeled lawn mowers out there, the blades work all the same.
Then there are 600 models weed eaters out there, they all use the same cords.
Then there is the old fashioned scythe that very few people still know how to use cause it ain't powered by gas or electric (the latter seems a crime today).
Then there's goats,..by far the best lawn mowers ever cause they clip the grass on a ongoing basis and also have a build in fertilizer plant.
It is the only mower that works around the clock without supervision or operator,.it does not depreciate in value, it sells for more than the purchase price after the mowing season is over if you bought it in the spring when young, it is also a consumable product.
The only drawbacks it has..it is hard on plants, flowers and shrubs and it don't mind mowing the neighbors lawn as well so a restraint of some kind is required in the form of a fence or pin and rope.

Belarus starter brand new in the box straight from the Belarus factory,..russian writing on the identification plate ;)
Brushes for these starters are not made aftermarket, can only be had from the dealer.
I have not found a brush that could be modefied to fit either.
