I don't actually watch it but I follow it -- mostly on
CyclingNews.com.
The big story that I took away from stage 1 was the debacle involving the bus getting stuck under the archway at the finish. So the organizers sent out word that the finish would be moved up to the 3km marker. Then they deflated the bus's tires and got it out of the way -- so they cancelled the revised finish line and went back to the original -- but there was mass confusion among the riders (which I think may have contributed to the big crash.)
Anyway... the stage winner (Marcel Kittel) said in an interview afterwards that he didn't know during the race about any of the business of moving the finish line -- which I tend to think helped him.
The three grand tours (Italy, France and Spain) are my favorite sporting events to follow. I do a lot of cycling so I can relate.
