Re: Blast Cabinet Lighting

I will look into the undercounter LED as you suggested.
Doesn't the lens of the light fixture get scratched up and dim the light?
Do you just replace at that point?
As for lamps protruding into the work area, remember that I am working with the larger cabinet than yours..........

Ron,

I realize that your cabinet is larger than mine and yes, I assume that eventually I will have to deal with a possibly scratched lens over the undercounter light, but I think you could use something like the stick-on clear sheets that come with your blast cabinet for the front window to protect it, I just haven't bothered. Unless you are going into the sand blasting business (and knowing that you are retired, I doubt that) I suspect that both your lens (should you buy a light like mine) and my lens will last as long as either one of us gives a schitt.. Just saying....

Re: 2" X 72" Belt Grinder Project

Y'orta use a pneumatic bike tire rather than the solid one.
It would have variable give when you were polishing against it depending on tire air pressure, and it would
facilitate replacing the belt by deflating/reinflating the tire.
Neat machine!!
Reflects some under-the-sea thinking!

Ron,

I don't think they make 'bike tires' small enough (to fit my machine) or wide and flat enough to support the two inch wide sanding belts. I also doubt they would be "true" enough. The 'working wheel' needs to be perfectly aligned and smooth. Remember the DC motor that I scavenged from the treadmill runs at 6,700 RPMS! Thankfully, I can control that speed from just a few RPMs to whatever the machine can stand, but everything needs to be damn near perfectly balanced.

I have a buddy out in CO who is an engineer and is very crafty (he's also an ex-sub sailor). He got an old treadle style grindstone that he motorized to do slow speed grinding with (he and I both make lots of our own tools etc..) and the grindstone was badly out of round. So he rigged up a jig that allowed him to regrind the surface of the stone as it went around using a 4" right-angle grinder with a diamond wheel mounted in a cross slide vice. This allowed him to slide the grinder back and forth across the grindstone's face, advancing it a little bit each time, while the grindstone was turning. It trued the face of the grindstone perfectly. He has suggested that I rig up something similar to true up my wheel. (I don't own a cross slide vice.) I am working on it.

Actually I am riding to a small town in Eastern Tenn the middle of next month. BTW I have not found any of those morning pictures but being a highly trained person I will search till I find them. ;-) Speaking of pictures here are a few of the 4 corners on ride.

Tom,

I want you to know that I still have NOT forgiven you for coming to Maine and not stopping in to visit me! (And eat a few lobsters!)

Glad to see you went to the Keys, (my old stomping grounds back in the early through mid-60's), it's a hell of a lot different today, but as they say "You can't go back home"... Sad but true...

You gotta be blind to miss all the semi-nude pics these guys are posting.. Takes up half my mornings..

Ride safe..

Re: SUCCESS

Well, I tried to apply my buddies grinding methods to make my "Big Wheel" actually round.. I'm sure he'll cringe at my methods, but they worked. I clamped my right-angle grinder in my vise and then turned the face of the 'Big-Wheel' against the spinning 4" grinder wheel. I started in the middle of the tread and then tapped the entire machine slightly sideways until I reached the edge of the tread. Then starting in the middle again I tapped the machine in the other direction until the entire tires surface was reground. Holy SMOKES!!! I couldn't see from one side of the shop to the other and the whole shop looked like the vulcanizing area at a Uniroyal factory! Everything was black, including me!

I finished up by cradling a orbital sander in the vise and spinning the 'Big-Wheel' against it while the sander was running to smooth out any minor holidays.

What a difference! The grinder runs much smoother, can be operated at higher speeds and is a pleasure to grind on!! Now I have to rebuild and improve my idler/tensioner/adjustor mechanism and replace my home made wheel with a skateboard wheel. The bearings I used just can't take turning at those higher RPM's.

What a great tool! Keeps your work piece much cooler than smaller stone grinding wheels and the belts come in a wide variety of grits.

Hope you guys all have a fine Navy Day...

Roger we were running behind our schedule and the bank account was getting beat up pretty bad as our plan of camping for four nights and hoteling for one was blown out of the water by the weather. We rode in rain suits about 25 of the first 30 days on the trip. We spent about a day and half in Maine due to the size of the state and lack of roads that go anywhere were you want to and the weather which SUCKED. Rained most of the time there and after we left Fort Kent to ride down Hwy 11 we found that the road was GONE, yes you read that correctly. When Maine department of roads says "pavement ends a head" they really mean the road is gone. We ended up riding/sliding down 10 miles of mud that was called the road bed after the construction company dug up the road surface. Did I say it was cold, pouring rain and about 10 PM? Made for a sucking ride that day. Lady at the Katahdin Valley Motel made my day by asking if everyone in Texas talked like I do and if so she was moving there. LOL I don't have an accent but boy the folks up in Maine sure talk funny.
