Starting up a REAL engine (Fairbanks Morse 38D)

Hey boys how goes the thread?

I thought you guys might enjoy watching what it took to light off the diesel engines in a WWII Diesel Submarine. This is the USS Silversides SS-236. She was launched on August 26, 1941 and preformed 14 war patrols between her launching and the end of WWII. Only one man lost his life from her crew throughout the entire war, and he was shot by a machine gun bullet during a surface attack against a Japanese gun boat.

Currently the Silversides is a museum boat located in Muskegon, MI where you can go and visit her. I was able to tour the Silversides in 2003 and she is in beautiful condition. Well worth the price of admission.

Here they are starting up engines # 3 and #4. (She is a four engine, Gato Class submarine.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Cf0gxvYqBY&feature=youtu.be

Enjoy!

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

Thanks, Skipper.
One really doesn't know what goes into getting those engines running.....more than pushing a button.
Same holds true for cranking up WWII aircraft.
The movies always make it appear that the pilot jumps in and turns a key, then away he goes............
Nothing could be further from the truth!

Ron,

You are dead on there! That little video still didn't show half of what went on, especially if we were lining up to snorkel (run engines underwater with air via a snorkel mast) or even more exciting was emergency diving with the engines running! Each engine room always had two men on watch and when the diving alarm sounded (and flashed light in the engine rooms as the noise of those monsters drowned out the claxon) those two guys flew into action like mad men trying to get all the valves shut before water back-flooded through them.

Hope all is well with you and yours...

Rog

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

Why is it that so many first time posters throw a situation out to the crowd, receive several responses, then are never heard from again??

Give them suggestions and they just go away.....no resolution, no thanks, no anything..........

Do they not know they can respond after their initial post???
