Glad I don't live n Astor anymore (for many more reasons than dodging Irma..hopefully!)

I am heading towards Galveston tomorrow to help fix my daughter's house after a bit of flooding.
I have a son in Palm Harbor, just north of Clearwater, and one west of Atlanta.
Seems like my kids have bulls eyes on their backs.

Now you have me wondering. I have some experience over in Putman County, from Palatka down to Georgetown and have actually hunted the Ocala Nat'l Forest, (Ocala Scrub as the locals call it) And we actually considered Astor as an alternate location to our West Coast winter hideout. The St John's estuary is a huge waterway (as I'm sure you know) and we wanted to be somewhere that we could enjoy boating. (We haul our own boat back and forth with us.)

Is there something about Astor we ought to know? Or a reason we should not consider it in the future?

I'd appreciate your candor on the subject.

OK you guys, we are in sister in laws house, located n Leesburg, Fl. ( Lake County) North of Orlando, South of Ocala HOPEFULLY safe . Don't know when we will lose power will try to update when brother in law isn't watchin porn...( LOL ) ..:laughing: :laughing:

Hang in Boo, this bloody storm refuses to act as the weather predictors would like it too, but as pictures trickle in of the damage it's left in it's wake, there is no doubt about it's strength. Be safe!

Nah..Astor is "A quaint little drinking town with a fishing problem."
We enjoyed living there, but all my best friends and neighbors had passed away, and we found
some of our newer neighbors to be somewhat unsavory.
Stay on or near the St.Johns and all is great!

I have a tee-shirt that makes that same claim, "A quaint little drinking town with a fishing problem." for Murrells Inlet, SC.

New neighbors are always less savory than the original inhabitants, I'm not sure why that is so, but it is...

Don't know anyone in Astor that rents their house out cheap for the winter do you? Hey, with Irma tearing Fl to pieces, we're grasping at straws up here..

Well James, it looks like 'Irma' is heading your way with what ever strength it has left. Best batten down and check the bilge pumps for proper operation..

All is calm this morning. Weather forecaster saying we could get 2-3 inches of rain and wind gusts to 40. Getting all the batteries charged this morning. It is cloudy this morning with the rain moving in this afternoon. Hope Boo and folks making it ok.

More irma

I expect that Boo-Boo is currently without power and is therefore incommunicardo. We will all have to wait on pins and needles until we hear from him again and learn how Irma has affected his family and his area. I have still not seen anything from the Keys, so I can only hope that my friends down that way chose to evacuate. They were all kids during Hurricane Donna (1960) and some of them spent that Cat4 storm in the Buccaneer Lodge where their parents put them up in the attic through a scuttle in the ceiling while the adults stood on tables up to their shoulders in water. They could hear the waves breaking on the roof! Needless to say that was an adventure none of them have ever forgotten and I expect the threat of a repeat storm of that magnitude would be all the encouragement they would need to head North!

If anyone has any info on the Keys, I would appreciate hearing about it.

I hope all in Irma's wake have survived intact and offer my best wishes to all who are still in it's grip and those it will yet effect. At least it has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm, but that means it expended a great deal of it's energy along nearly the entire Florida Peninsular. It will take weeks to return things to any semblance of normalcy.
