Just wondering if anyone's used the spring loaded quick loading trimmer heads you feed a piece of line thru and rotate to load.

Are they worth it or a gimmick?

I have used that type of trimmer for MANY years, first a Ryobi 2-stroke and now a Troy-Bilt 4-stroke(must be made by Ryobi for TB, because the "Speed Spool" is exactly the same and both use the Ryobi "quick-fit attachments" I have purchased). Personally, I like the Speed Spool type head and the only problems I have had with either of those trimmer heads is that the release buttons(bump knobs) for feeding out more line tend to wear out every few years. There are generic Arnold/MTD inexpensive replacement knobs readily available for that problem. And on the Speed Spools...I bought an extra spool, so I fill both up(using the easy load method), secure the line on the spare and then when the one on the trimmer runs out of line(always in the middle of trimming my yard:0) I simply swap them and then refill them both when that one runs out. I like that too!!!

I have one I hated the piece of junk so I had to modify it just a little. I added a washer under the spring so it is not so touchy would let line out every little bump on the ground.
After my second button I just use a washer and a bolt.
The automatic feed worked good until I wore the head down. Now I just take it apart and wind the line on. So much faster.

For a homeowner it is a good head as you will only use it maybe 3 hours a year. I use my trimmer about 4 hours a day.
Down fall for me is it does not hold 105 line

I think they are worth it because they can hold a lit of line and it takes less than 30 seconds to reload.

I, too, always run out in the middle so I attach a section of line (wrapped up) to my trimmer handle....see the third pic in the following thread:

Forgot to put in my first post...I'm looking at picking up a few yards to mow this summer, just as a stress reliever/beer money so it'd get used a little more than the average homeowner but not true commercial usage. Was going to put it on one of the Remington straight shaft trimmers from Menards

I use mine pretty much commercially and it is holding up well. Some wear on the bottom, but that should be expected when you are weedwacking along a hard surface!

I use a commercial straight shaft Echo trimmer with their speed head. I've used a lot of different trimmer heads and this one is the best I've ever used. Very tough and feeds nice. Not sure about any other brands of this style of head. Next time your near a Echo dealer you should check out theirs.

All you need is a adapter if it does not fit yours.

I use the Echo/ Shindiawa speed feed an it work well on fs-90r :thumbsup::smile::wink:
