You know it's strange. I had three similar posts on my support forum the other day and I have to approve the posters.

How do they do that? Is it the host or a flaw in PHP?

Are they posting from a different IP than their registration IP?

It's not hard to spoof an IP and there are plenty of proxies out there. All you can do is weed them daily.

#22

The problem is there not posting messages, there creating albums with there advertisements. There has been at least 5 new spammers that joined the forum today that I know of and probably a few more. It happens every time he sends out his monthly news letter, so there coming from his other forums or where ever he is promoting this forum. I removed the albums but I'm leaving them registered so he can see there still joining and maybe he can do more to prevent it from happening.

Holy smokes! You shouldn't have a problem keeping on top of it.

You can always "whois" and complain to their provider. Sometimes it works.

You would think it wouldn't be a problem. The problem is something that can't be fixed and the only thing that can be done is for an administrator to stay on top of the situation and delete the spammers daily. Yes they have programs like the spam-o-matic they use here that are supposed to take care of the problem but for everyone of those programs they have or will have the spammers have already or will figured away around them.

Yeah and miraculously 99% all have Gmail Addresses. All 350 that have registered in the last week or so. Some now are using Yahoo

Gmail addresses are by far the easiest to steal/phish from the legitimate owner.

Yahoo, aol, etc. all seem to run in cycles. Much less so since several of the domains have put limits on the number of addresses that can be had at one time. Gmail, however, if you want 12.1 million consecutive/random email addresses, no problem.

I used to get a lot of: IP originating in Asia, they'd fill in a European time zone, claim they were in South America and have a Yahoo.uk email address. I usually had them out the door fast enough that it couldn't hit them in the *** as they exited.

Two new anti-spam measures have been put in place. The registration process now uses a custom image that requires a human to look at an image and answer a question about the image (specifically, about mowers). This should help.

Ditto! Are you using capcha? Was it easy to implement?

#46

No, we're not using captcha as the spam bots get past that. We're using a custom image verification that asks people to answer a question about a picture that is shown to them. For example, we have a picture of two mowers and the question is "how many mowers are in this picture?" If they answer "2" or "two" it lets them register. If they answer anything else, it makes them try again with a different picture (such as "what color is this mower?").

Yeah I see there still registering and once they figure it out they'll be a lot more. The only way of stopping them would be by changing the New accounts activation system to Administration approval. That means you would need an Admin here to approve new membership registration daily before there allowed to enter the forum to do anything at all.

Every captcha that's out there has been broken and the new ones are usually broken within a week. 'Tis just a mater of time before any sort of challenge questions are broken. If they want in, they'll get in.

That's not so bad. New registrants can still read until approved right?

Most forums that have this kind of problem go with the Administrative approval system. Generally speaking you only have to regulate the system that way for a few months. Once you let them know that they can no longer register without Administrative Approval they'll stop trying. The Problem is that most administrators don't understand that there dealing with hackers and if there good there isn't anything thing they can't get around.
