Snapper rear engine rider w/ no fire

Hello folks I'm new here, 2 seasons ago I bought a 2000 yr model 14 hp rear engine rider. This season I cant get her started, not getting fire. I visually inspected all the wiring that I could see. Pulled the cover off the engine to inspect the magneto(which I took some emery cloth and cleaned well). I could some wiring running fan shroud/flywheel assembly and here where I have some questions. Is this mower gonna have points? And how do you remove the flywheel assembly? I couldn't get it off. Do you have to press it off? I'm certainly not a mower mechanic but not totally mechanically useless, any help from someone who's been down this road would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and Welcome to LMF! Before you pull the flywheel, pull the kill wire on the magneto and see if you still get fire. If you get fire, then you've got the kill wire grounding out somewhere. Most mechanics have a flywheel puller but I have taken them off by taking a flat punch and tap around the shaft on the flywheel but not hit the threads. Also put some penetrating oil near the keyway and shaft and when you tap on it the oil will go down around the shaft and help loosen the flywheel. A little upward pressure with a bar will help while you tap on the top of the crankshaft using a board on top of the shaft. Do not hit on the metal end! They have flywheel knockers and work great if you have one. My suggestion will work as I've done it countless times.

Hey Dave, thanks for the response. I'll try checking the kill wire, this mower is a 2000 model. Are there points under the flywheel/fan assembly? Hope it's not a silly question, I know some older mower's have em and I'm really just trying to figure out how to diagnose my prob. Thanks again for the help Dave.

No need to take the flywheel off.

Reset the coil air gap. Use a playing card

(( racing is the only sport that you need two balls ))

Ok, I reset the air coil gap w/ a playing card as suggested and pulled the black kill switch wire and danged if she didn't fire up. So does that mean that the kill switch under the seat is definitely faulty or is there another possible problem that I'm perhaps over looking? I sincerely appreciate the help thus far guys.

Tom when you take off the black kill wire you are bypassing every safety switch as well as the key switch. I guess someone could have told you how to shut it off if it started.
Ok set the air gap again. Set the flywheel where it pulls the coil to it then insert the card In between the two. And tighting it up.

To shut it off if it starts just touch the black wire to the engine.

If you set the gap like this and it does not start. And you have no spark at the spark plug then get a new coil

(( racing is the only sport that you need two balls ))

Ok im in the same boat I just started at a snapper shop and I inherited a headache. my first day I was told to put the pto cable on this new rear engine rider. 2013 model (new mower ) and after I put it on and tried to start it, not even a click, nothing. Heres what I have done so far. It will run if you disconnect the black wire from the coil and jump across the starter solenoid it will start and run.

*set the air gap
*replaced the ignition switch with a new non faulty unit
*checked the seat switch .1 ohm
any help would be appreciated
