So some of you know I came into a Snapper RER at a decent price.

Yesterday I got all the years of crud/grime/caked on grass off of it. Turned the engine and its not frozen. Confirmed dead battery. Also removed air cleaner and noticed that all of the linkage was very stiff. After I carefully got them moving I called it a night. So I went to wally world and they had a battery for it in stock.

Came home today and installed the new battery. I hit the electric start once and it turned over a few times. So...I made sure the gas was flowing to the carb and tried to get it running. I could not. I did pour a small amount of gas straight in to the carb, and on the first stroke it fired right up and ran until out of gas.

So I have a lack of gas at the carb issue.

Do they make rebuild kits? Is a good soak in some gas all it may need?

Goal is to get it running and cutting, then I can make it pretty.

Also, any clear way to determine year of manufacture?

Yes, as far as the year goes, I posted in a thread in the Snapper forum not but yesterday. The first two digits of the 'code' on the B&S fan shroud (stamped somewhere) are the year. That looks to be the original engine, so that'll give you the year of the machine, too.

Sounds like you're gonna have to take the bowl apart and give the whole carb a good cleaning. Soak it but good once it's apart in Carb cleaner. Yes, they have rebuild kits, but the float isn't included. I'd get one just to be safe. B&S floats aren't cheap, neither are the kits, but since you got such a great deal on the purchase price........it'll be well worth it.

I'd also replace the fuel lines and the filter (if it still has one - if not, get one)

You'll be up and running in no time!

A little more progress. I got started on the clean-up, carb removal, degrease, etc. Looks like a critter had a nice little home...

Need to get some gaskets now, and a rebuild kit just for good measure. Everything on this mower is stock. Pretty sure it was always taken to the local dealer for service, etc.

NICE JOB! I trust this poor, neglected (at least for the last few years) Snapper in your worthy hands.

I am salivating for more progress.....you do a thorough job! Kudos!

Don't forget the 'Ivory' Krylon to keep everything antique -lookin.

Good thing you had to tear it apart - if it'd started right off, you woulda had a real mess with that nest......if not a fire, and a WORSE mess.

Nice clean feeling. This reminds me of the day I received my Snapper. Just wish I had those bars.

What do you mean?

Now those were the days of have a good lawn mower for years.....You got a nice project & your doing it very good! Replace those carb mount bolts with some new socket head bolts & lock washers, you'll get a better seal at the block and they won't back off on you. Good luck!

What do you mean?

Probably the rear bars, that are used to stand the mower on end.

Ah yes, the bars do make it easier to clean and work on some areas of the machine for sure.

One of mine is bent, and so while stood on end, it is a little wobbly. Safe, but not as safe as it could be.

Bonus, have found a few old B&S engines out at my wife's familie's farm that could be used for parts if needed.

You get the original running? What year is it?

A little teaser...It wont match the patina of everything else...but hey...I'll be looking good! ha...

Not had a lot of time to work on it, but I do have some parts in, and hope to have it running today! Cleaned the incredibly gunked up carb. The bowl and float were almost completely gelled together. Forgot to get pics of that...

Yes and no I have not figured out the exact year yet...it should run today...seriously doubt the original engine is bad. Sorry for delay in response...

It runs!

Sorry, could not rotate the vid...but it shows the engine dying when the throttle is barely moved off choke.

I'm having an issue with the carb though. It runs on choke, but boggs down if you move it the slightest off choke. Need to find info on carb so I can adjust it if needed. Also want to find a schematic of carb linkage to see if everything is hooked up correctly. I have not messed with anything, but who knows who has touched this before.

Any help in this area appreciated... thanks.

Since you have tha Model # The Snapper web site has PDF files of the owners manuals and parts drawings. And they have a support number where I have found they will email you PDF files --
Customer Relations Center Technical Support Team at 1(800)935-2967
The model and serial # should be on the frame tube and the engine # should be samped in the sheet metal or on the muffler shroud.
I don't own Snappers myself, but have been working on two that bleong to an 85 year old neighbor -

Good Luck -- What you have done so far looks GREAT !

ugh...up with the baby...anyway...

Here is a schematic of the linkage I have, and everything is hooked up correctly. I guess I have some other issue as it runs on choke, but move the throttle lever just the slightest and it bogs down.

My set up is FIG. 107, though my throttle cable comes from the bottom.

Start with the screw on the bottom of the bowl. Fire the engine up and back it out slowly. You should notice a difference right away. I'm thinking it is screwed it too far and is restricting the flow of gas into the engine, and why you have to run it with the choke on.

mullins87 this was my exact problem. I had not touched the screw on the bottom of the bowl as I figured this would have hardly been touched in the past. Anyways, backed it out about 1.5 to 2 turns. ran great at full throttle. I did have to adjust the idle screw on top but no big deal.

It really runs great now. I just pushed the yard yesterday, but went ahead and did it again today on the rider. :confused2:

I'll be finishing up my routine maintenance, etc. in a few days. So I'll use it for the remainder of the season and then get back on the paint and appearance over next winter.

Love it...
