Got to one of the sites that specialise in repowering mowers
Small Engine Supplies I think is a sponsor of this site so it would be nice to use them.
On the site are details on how to measure your engine
All of thier engines have the dimensions if you click on the more information.
Almost any B &S engine with a 1" pto shaft will fit.
99% of the variations are the alternator fitted, colour of the cover, type of air filter, type of fuel delivery, type of starter ,name on the tag etc etc etc.
Bigger engines will not make the mower go any faster but will have more power and use more fuel.
SES had some 11Hp for $ 230 + freight and that will come close to the price of a piston, con rod, pushrods and gasket set and have warranttee.
On smaler engine I try to find a duel starting engine so you don't have to worry about jump starting.
On a RER the engine height is not important as there is no hood and on a flat deck like the Snapper length is not particularly important either.
However you might need to rig up some sort of fuel tank as your motor came with fuel tank attached to the motor and most modern ones use a remote tank.
They changed the way Hp is measured sinc your otor was sold so now the same motor would be called 8 Hp
