I have a Lawn Boy Insight walk-behind mower, Model 10684, Serial No. 250029123. The self propelled drive stopped working. I can push it forward but wheels lock when trying to pull it backwards. It happened on my last cut of the season and I won't be able to work on it until spring. Anyone have any thoughts as to what is the likely problem and the fix?

Thanks, BOJO3919

See that this unit is probably 15+ years old I suspect the rhe drive, not transmission is in need of some TLC. If has not been serviced in a which, I’ll bet you will find worn gears, a mixture of grease and dirt, possibly worn bearings and bearing hoc. All parts are still available and you should be able to get them at any good Toro dealer. I’ve attached the service manual which will assist you in the repair. In my opinion these old mules are definitely worth repairing, unless the drive axles are worn. Come back when you get into it with any specific questions. https://www.lawnboy.com/getpub/22446

Rivets,
Thanks for your quick reply and link to service manual. I will peruse the manual and get back when I have the opportunity to work on the machine.

Not a hard repair if you have the patience.

Well I decided this would be a good little winter project so I motivated myself to remove the engine and move the mower carcass to my basement. I doing so, I discovered that the had belt come off the gear box pulley and was jammed between the pulley and the the belt retainer bracket, locking up the drive mechanism. So now I have two questions:
1. What may have been the cause of the (original) belt jamming?
2. Should I also now open up the gear box even though it is still functioning properly?
Thanks for any input that you may have!

Most often the cause is a small stick or mulch gets caught, causing the belt to jump off. I’ve seen this very often. Just replace the belt, because most times you will find the belt burnt. No reason to open the gearbox.

I found a new belt and will do the swap. While I have it on the bench I plan to clean and re-grease the drive wheel pinions and front wheel axel bolts as well. Hope it serves me well for a few more years as this is my trimming mower and the bulk of grass I mow with my lawn tractor. Thanks for your help!
