I recently purchased a SWZ 48" fixed deck mower. How many spacers are you guys using on top of the spindle? How many above blades? How many on casters? I have new hi lift blades, but think the mower should provide a better cut with a little stripping visible. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If when you say "spacers on the casters" you mean these things: billt goat wheels - Copy.jpg, I would say it depends on the type of grass you have. Some grasses need to be cut short (you would take out spacers from the bottom) and some grasses need to be cut higher (you would add spacers to the bottom). If you need to make larger height adjustments there are other things to do.

Im looking to acheive the maximum amount of airflow under teh deck. Do the blades need to be up in the deck to acheive this?

I think the shape of the deck affects the airflow more than the position of the blades. A more rounded deck will create better airflow than a shallow one.

To get more air flow you need the blade low.
And the lower the blade sits in the deck the better cut you will get.

If the blades sit up high there is less air above them to move. And you will notice that you will have uncut grass in the middle.

If you want better stripping set the blades about one spacer up from the lowest. And run the deck level or the back just a little lower.

Or you could get a striping roller for it.

A roller is best. So you can hide them ugly tire tracks.
I hate to see tire tracks

Same thing here! I too bought a SWZ 48" it had been serviced at the selling Scag dealer all it's life. it cut like ***** had to cut the yard twice sometimes ! Tried new blades ,belts .etc. no change.
I figured the Scag dealer knew how many space went were ? WRONG! Looked at a manual on the Scag web site they say at "least" 3 on top ( on top of the blade ) they had 1 on top. Makes sense the blade needs to be low to suck / pull the grass up to be cut by the blades. It was night and day differance !!!
I am going to try 4 on top and put all the spacers on the casters to lift the mower deck up so not to cut the grass too short
