I bought a used/rebuilt LA115 JD rider and just had a guy stop to pick up my old Sears mower... he asked if he could look at my "new" mower and said they had some experience with these and they were a good mower with one exception.... there is an aluminum bracket that holds a spring etc. when you engage the mower blades and this aluminum piece has been upgraded to a steel bracket to replace the aluminum one... Is this correct? And is this the part I need to buy?

there is a kit (GY20978) that has the above new style arm and a new lever too, If I remember correctly, both were beefed up

Hey.... I think I have this right. Yesterday was the day to mow the lawn so I took out a magnet, pulled out the JD mower, and slapped the magnet on the part in question. From what the mechanic said, the original poorly designed part was an aluminum bracket so before ordering a new steel part I decided to see if it was steel or aluminum. The magnet stuck to the part so it has to be steel. And it looks like it is quite "beefy" too so I think I am OK.
