Hey all, I have a 24 B&S Vtwin INtek in which the cylinder 1 exhaust valve is barely moving. Pushrod is fine, so I suspect the Camshaft Lobe. Anyway, I have removed the engine which is upside down on workbench right now. I have of course removed the clutch and bolt no problem, but cannot get the upper pulley to budge at all. I have soaked it for 2 days with pb blaster, there is no set screw in it. I picked up a 3 finger puller at parts store, but it just bends the pulley. Tried to heat it, still nothing. Am I missing something. the crankshaft has a groove in which I suspect the pulley has a rise to fit in the groove. Any ideas appreciated. Would like to get this thing fixed......Thanks!!

I use a large bearing style puller to get under the whole pulley and a two leg puller. Yes they can get very tight.

I put a chunk of 2x4 on the engine set a big tie rid tool on it with fork end under the pulley then I sit on the other end and tap the pulley with a hammer. ( and I did say tap not whack the crab out of it) as close to the shaft as I can

Thanks for the ideas. May have to see if I can find a different puller. Don't have a tie rod fork, but good idea.....

Sounds like new pully time anyways, so cut it off with a cut off wheel.

Sounds like cutting the pulley would be a little better for the engine too. I have found that Sea Foam has a product that is even better than PB blaster, its called "Deep Creep" when you heat the part you can see the stuff being sucked in. Not cheap around $10.00 a spray can, but in my opinion worth the price.

How do you keep from damaging the shaft if you cut it off?

Very carefully, I typically would use a small hand held grinding tool and cut almost to the shaft. This may weaken the pully allowing you to pry it the rest of the way. Add some penertating oil to the shaft to keep it wet while prying. A little heat to the pulley would not hurt.

No matter which way you decide to remove the pulley you need to be careful not to damage the shaft.
