I have a ride on mower, poulan pro. The manual clutch is engaging, although it is old, and makes a rough sound when I pull on the belt. My issue is when I get to some longer grass the blades stop spinning. When I disengage and re-engage the clutch on smooth ground the blades take a bit to start spinning again. Like the belt is loose, although I have put four springs on the tensioner arm to keep it tight. Ai said it was the wrong belt, but it is the right one. My dealer said sometimes the brackets get bent underneath, so I checked and swapped the mounting bracket with the opposite side, just in case they were bent towards the clutch assembly. Alas I still have the same issue. Any advice is good advice here, thanks.
 
Is the belt is OEM or after market as I coming with a couple different lengths for AA (Hex) belt?

PIX and Rotary says the belt is an AA105 (107") and the OEM ones are indicating 108-1/2". All depends on how they are measuring it. Otherwords one is measuring at the center of the belt and other the outside edge. It takes a belt measuring tool to measure on the center.

Another possible is the idler arm pivot hole and retaining stepped washer is worn egg shaped.

Actually it is just research. Now I supposedly have that Stens 265-686 in stock but it will late this afternoon before I can double check it length here due sub freezing temperature and plastic storage are fragile at these temps. Since it shown as one item I have to put my hands on it to be sure I got it.
 
Could be that the spindle pulleys are so used, the dust has polished them to a mirror finish making it not gripping the belt like it should

Then I would be replacing every v pulley time a mower came it. Cloth covered belt are clutching belts and the cloth polishes the pulley. Now note this polishing does create a problem over time that is the wear the pulleys widening and deepening of pulley's V thus making the belt to effectively longer than spec'd as the rides deeper in the pulleys.

Most customer don't believe me as why some v-pulleys get replaced on repairs. That's why I have a set of gauges to show them the wear. I right now have one customer that going to need his PTO clutch because the pulley wear.
