Went to Home Depot over the weekend and they had the replacement blades there so I bought and installed. The blade set is designed for the newer quadracut models, but the box said it works for the HRM215 so I slapped em on. So far so good, went for a test cut on a strip of lawn and the blades of grass were super-clean. Today my mulching plug arrives in the mail so I'm looking forward to seeing that "powdered" mulching action once that cabinet is all sealed up in the back.

I noticed that the rubber guard that drags behind the mower is starting to pop loose a bit on the right side - what exactly is used to refasten that to the resin deck? I'd rather not have to order a whole new one and I figure if I just pull it off I'll be taking a constant barrage of pebbles and other loose material in the shins...

Early models (called K0) used a support plate and bolts to mount the rear shield. Later models (K2/K3) used pop rivets. You can find the serial number on the top rear of the mower deck; here are some pages from the shop manual to help. Any Honda Dealer can order the necessary parts for you. Here's a link to find one in your area:

Thanks

I did a whole yard yesterday and I immediately noticed that the mulching plug was causing the engine to really struggle and almost drown itself. The grass wasn't overly long nor wet. Could this be a problem with the carburetor or something else? As i posted above, the blades are brand new but perhaps i didnt buy a pure mulching blade set? i always mow the highest rpm like the manual says, but I ended up having to mow really slowly and constantly lifting the front wheels off the ground to allow the mulch to blow out.

Still have the box the blades came in? For the HRM215, it uses (combined) part number 08720-V32-001

If you bought 08720-VH7-000, those blades are just for HRX models. Might not work correctly if used on an older HRM mower.

Yes pretty sure that's the combo part number of the blades. On the box, the models listed included HRM215. I'm assuming that they'd be for both bagging and mulching?

Yes, the twin-blade set-up is absolutely the way to go for mulching. They are also good for bagging and side-discharge (optional chute, P/N 06814-VE2-030, $26.65).

For the ultimate bagging performance, Honda offers there's a special bag-only blade (single) P/N: 72511-VE1-020 ($12.98).

So then if I have the right blades, what is the most likely cause of the problem?

I'd guess the engine may be running too slow. With the blades engaged, and the throttle set to FAST, the engine should be running at 3,150~3,300. You need a tachometer to really check this, and it's easy to adjust if needed. Here's the procedure:

That's interesting, and i wonder if that may explain why every time I try to engage the blade from the stopped position it seems to have trouble and sometimes stalls out. I guess I will need to go find a tachometer.
