I have a Husqvarna 2748GLS with a B&S Model No. 44Q777,motor that has an oil leak from what looks like the crank seal. I replaced the seal and all of the gaskets needed to get to the seal last year and now it is leaking again. Is there something else I am missing? Is there a problem with this motor?
Any thoughts would be welcome. Thinking about re-motoring with different brand of motor and if I do what would be the best way to go?

Could be just a problem with the seal. the other possibility is the sump bearing that that seal fits in is damaged. Which would also mean that the crankshaft will be also damaged. Don't know on your engine but I have seen causes where the crankshaft would have a groove worn in it level with the hole that supplies oil to the bearing. The sump bearing will have a ridge at the same level on the side facing the rear of the mower. The combination of the crankshaft, and bearing damage allows the crankshaft to move around in the bearing causing an repeat oil leak.

You will have to pull the engine and inspect the crankshaft, and sump bearing for damage. If damage is found will need to replace both the crankshaft and the sump assy. The above problem has been linked to shorted electric clutches that allow arcing between the bearing and the crankshaft.

Another question, what other B&S motors would be a direct replacement if I don't want a 27hp?

Most mowers are under powered so I always try to go up in hp. But I get what your wanting to do.

Have you looked for a used mower with a bad deck or transaxle that you could use the engine?

have you checked the breather assembly(valve cover) for obstruction?and did you use a seal protector when you replaced the seal?
