Oil brand and type

Do not use non-detergent oils in an engine that produces dirty oil. I used to re-machine and build engines for a living many years ago. When someone came in with an engine from pre-detergent oil days, say a 1936 Buick, we had to charge maybe an extra day's work to clean out all the oil lines, scrape the caked on dirt off everything to get it clean. Even the caustic parts washer with really hot water sprays would not clean it - and that washer would take paint off things when they were washed in it.

Sounds like a Quaker State motor oil was used.

Hello Star Tech,

Quaker State along with most oil brands of the time got a "bad rep" back in the early days. A lot of those same people had a bad habit of short trip driving and removing the engine thermostats because they were afraid of engine overheating issues.

To top it all off many of those same people never changed their oil. It was no wonder a vehicle with 100K miles was considered to be "worn out".

I recall those many hours of scraping and cleaning the insides old cast iron vehicle engine blocks and heads. Of course, leaking cork valve cover gaskets were common because the oil drain back holes were stopped up with old oil sludge.

Fortunately, oil quality has improved in the last 20 to 30 years and about the only "garbage oil" left on the market are the generic "recycled" selections. Most people will not waste the money on those unless it is a travel emergency.

Sounds like a Quaker State motor oil was used.

Dad bought a new 1968 Ford F150 or was it an F100 off the dealer floor? Any-who, had the 360 v-8. He ran Quacker State 10W-40 year round. Changed it twice a year regardless of mileage.

Year 2006 rolls around. I swear, on oil change day, you must take the stick outside with reading glasses on and hunt for the level. It was that clean. No way you could tell inside the garage with the naked eye.

Dad had the engine rebuilt because it was leaking a DIME size oil drop per week. Machine shop thought it was a joke. Exterior was clean as new. Interior bearings checked out as new. All clearances were still in spec.

Oh this was Quacker State petroleum grade. Not the semi synthetic nor any so called full synthetic. So speak easy on Quacker State oil.
