I bought a used mower and I charged the battery to 100 percent.cranked it maybe six seconds and let it run for a few minutes and go to restart it and the battery is on 80 percent on the charger.i did this a few times and now the battery wont even charge.put another batt on and it did the same thing.being used could it be a wire not connected or is it the alternator.model 407777-0124-e1 19 h.p briggs

First thing you are going to need to do is start the mower, and see what the voltage at the battery is. Let us know and then we can narrow down the possible problems.

There are a lot of ways to make a dead battery " work " , Y-tube is full of them.
Start with a pair of jumper leads and take some voltage measurements ,
At the battery terminal you should see at least 13 V and no more than 15V while the engine is running.
Check between the alternate wire (S) and earth with the engine running full speed you should see at least 13V .
Now there are 7 different stators fitted to type 40 Briggs so we need to know how many wires come out of the engine and what shape & colour the connector is

I just bought a 275 cca batt and a multimeter.engine off 12.69 and with it running 13.40 and it took about five minutes to reach that point.i have a black from engine going into a yellow and on the other side of the wire is a gray from engine going into a red.then theres another two wires.black from engine into a white and on the side of that is a red from engine going into a red.then there is a separate yellow wire that isn't connected to anything.this mower doesn't have lights hooked up
