I bought a used mower and I charged the battery to 100 percent.cranked it maybe six seconds and let it run for a few minutes and go to restart it and the battery is on 80 percent on the charger.i did this a few times and now the battery wont even charge.put another batt on and it did the same thing.being used could it be a wire not connected or is it the alternator.model 407777-0124-e1 19 h.p briggs

First thing you are going to need to do is start the mower, and see what the voltage at the battery is. Let us know and then we can narrow down the possible problems.

There are a lot of ways to make a dead battery " work " , Y-tube is full of them.
Start with a pair of jumper leads and take some voltage measurements ,
At the battery terminal you should see at least 13 V and no more than 15V while the engine is running.
Check between the alternate wire (S) and earth with the engine running full speed you should see at least 13V .
Now there are 7 different stators fitted to type 40 Briggs so we need to know how many wires come out of the engine and what shape & colour the connector is

I just bought a 275 cca batt and a multimeter.engine off 12.69 and with it running 13.40 and it took about five minutes to reach that point.i have a black from engine going into a yellow and on the other side of the wire is a gray from engine going into a red.then theres another two wires.black from engine into a white and on the side of that is a red from engine going into a red.then there is a separate yellow wire that isn't connected to anything.this mower doesn't have lights hooked up

Tha is a handy piece of info , a lot better than the Briggs Alternator identification chart which being a wall chart is impossible to scan.
Just one thing, only pages 1 to 8 of it seemed to download properly .
Do you have all of it or was it a corruped file in the first place

The 12.6 and 13.4 readings says the battery is charging with proper voltage. May need to check for a drain on the battery when it isn't running. Need to test amp draw when not running. Shouldn't exceed 100 miliamps with key off.

ive tried this with two new batteries.is it possible it wasn't charging because it was sitting for months or years that the magnets were rusty and wasn't charging or decharging cause it seems to charge but it takes forever like five min.my other mower is at full charge in three seconds so I don't think the charging system is right at all taking that long to get a charge

The length of time to recharge the battery will vary with what charging system you have. It sounds like it could be the 10/16 system, but there is also the possibility of the 3/5 system, which isn't any more than a twinkle charger.

If you have the 3 amp charging system, it actually takes 2-3 hours after starting to fully recharge the battery.

I looked at briggs and Stratton but I guess there is three for my motor.the pictures even on zoom I cant tell how many wires are coming from the alternator.mine has a red and black on one plug and gray and black on the other plug.then there is a yellow with a round end ,theres only lights and electric start on this mower why would there be a big alternator.why do they make things difficult

Let me know if it worked this time .......... I added something this time but pay no attention to the wiring diagrams .......( they're for a Murray)

You have the 3/5 charging system. The grey wire goes to a fuel solenoid, the black is the kill wire. The red wire should have a bump above the connector. the black next to it is AC and is for the headlights.

With only 2-3 amp for battery charging it will take 2 to 3 hours of running to fully recharge the battery after starting. Now if the diode, aka the bump goes bad you can have battery discharge when it isn't running as well as not charge the battery. But in the cases I have seen it won't get the 13 plus volts at the battery.
