No start condition

Craftsman Rider with B&S 44S877 V twin motor. Had to put a stator in it. Also changed the oil, filter and air filter and new plugs at the same time. Ran fine for about a minute then started missing and finally quit. Turns over fine but now will not start. What I have done so far- Set the valve lash at .004", checked push rods-not bent. What I know- plugs are getting spark, they smell like gas so I assume they are getting fuel. Compression is about 65 PSI in both cylinders, squirted oil in each cylinder and compression went up to about 85 PSI. Plugs look dark, strange for new plugs. I have a feeling the cam is faulty and/or compression relief has failed. Anyone have any other suggestion before I get in deeper? Thanks in advance
 
Camshaft failure not common on V twin Briggs engines. I suspect that you didn't get the flywheel torqued properly after replacing the stator and you now have a sheared flywheel key.

To make sure it's not a carb needle/seat issue, smell the oil stick. Anything other than oil is a red flag. Could be normal as you describe but make sure. Takes about four seconds is all.

Sounds normal to me. ACR is doing it's job.

Recommend you pull the fuel hose off AT the carb inlet. Drain into a glass jar. Look for water in the bottom. Verify you have a solid flow AT this carb inlet. Crank the engine for the fuel pump to work if yours has one.



Where did you get the plugs from?

Did you disconnect the after-fire solenoid wires on the carb bowl?
 
I am goin to try a new flywheel key first as mine does not look normal.If that does not work I will continue with other suggestions. Will update ASAP. So thankful for all your help.
 
So it was definitely the flywheel key throwing off the timing. Nothing like a 50 cent product throwing a wrench in things. Of course it was my fault for not tightening the flywheel nut adequately. Learned much during this process. Many thanks too all for your help.
