Hello, I have and old (80's) commercial walk behind 52 inch J.D. that I'm having inconsistant starting problems. It has a 14 horse kawasaki that right now has no spark. I use it to mow my 2 acre lot. Mowed about a month ago and had trouble then, but kept trying and messing with it's 5/6 safety switches and suddenly had spark and started and mowed for an hour and a half fine. Today tried to start to mow and no spark, no matter what I've messed with. I just took this in late last fall to dealer for ruff running and 350 bucks later this.... Seems like every year and a half or so have to take it in for about the same money. Its old and cost some, but it is also big cut and fast when working. Any ideas? Has anybody tried to download or find a service manual for something like this? Thanks bob

JD does not allow manuals out. They are very tight with all info, unless you are an authorized dealer. I would take as much time as needed to check every wire and connection to see if they are good and clean. When I have problems like this I use a dielectric lube after cleaning each connection to make sure it is good. This also goes for every safety switch. These are the type of problem that I like, they can drive me nuts, but I know if I take my time and don't try any short cuts I'll find the problem. Good Luck

When you have a no spark. One of the first things to do is isolate engine and chassis. This will tell you if you have a engine electrical problem or a switch problem. Then start from there. Also remember the negative circuit turns off the spark.

Thanks to all for your good advice. will try to be patient, and will definitely try to get a wiring schematic. How, if you don't mind, do you isolate the engine and chasis from the rest of the wiring. Also has me thinking to check the chasis ground first, and start scraping cleaning the connections. Thanks bob

This is why we get machines dropped off at the shop with all the safety's removed ! Simply weather change moisture screws up the safety -

yes, I am tempted to take them off too. Mine seem to be shorted when you activate the switch. Example: when your hands are on the handle's the switch is shorted. There's 1 on each handle, 1 on the transmission, 1 on the blade control and there must be something on the oil level. I have found and checked the handles and transmission and blade control, but have no Idea about the oil level indicator is. bob
