No blade no start

Briggs verticle shaft OHV won't start without the blade on put on blade starts right up. Is the blade needed to act as a fly wheel to store energy needed to complete the compression cycle? Without the blade pull cord will snap back on comp stroke like it has too much compression. Question is, Am I thinking right?

I check mine every 5 years or so
