What are inserts? Are you talking about window frames and all?

They leave the external frame of the window in the house. After striping out all the old internal working parts of the window they install new inserts into the old external frame of the window. When the windows are ordered they custom made at the factory to fit the frame. It dose make for a smaller glass surface but not bad. This is the reason I had it done by someone who knew what they are doing.

Was just curious, I'm doing something similar, I'm replacing the whole window and frames. I'm taking out my five sliders and replacing them with the Simonton Refections 5500 Vinyl Double Hung. Should be here next week, there also being made. There supposed to have some type of gas between the window for insulating purposes.

The ones I bought are Low-E (very lightly tinted) with Argon gas in them. My exterior frames were still good so I didn't need the cost of the complete windows. I can sure see a different in heating the house, haven't needed the fan running on my heater at all today and before it ran all day on days this cold. I am hoping it will also be easier to cool the house this summer. When the weather breaks the same contractor will be installing 1/2 in. insulation board with vinyl siding. I was also thinking about raping the house but they tell me it will be too much and the house wouldn't breath. insulation board or raping but not both I am told seeing they both do the same job. I am sure you will enjoy your new windows seeing they are much easier to clean from inside the house. I was also looking at the Simonton windows. They are top of the line windows but seeing I not getting any younger I went with the cheaper Ellison windows. You wouldn't be sorry you went with Simonton I am sure.

Mine are the same Low E with the argon gas and according to the rep that was here I'll see like a 40% Energy Savings on the electric bill or so they claim. The windows I'm replacing are Big sliders like 70" wide 60" High and one is a double slider and it's 94" wide. The thing that bugs me is the windows there taking out there gonna destroy, I wished I knew someone who need windows cause I'd sure give them to someone to use.

I got most of my camp window from along the road that someone had setting out for free in their front yard. I have only one that I wish I wouldn't have installed and that is because it has bad dry rot in it. I am seeing the energy saving today in heating my house so I can believe the rep is telling a true story and I have only had them in my house since Monday. Are you going to install them yourself? Not that bad of a job, just level them and nail them in place with the nail strips. I installed all my own at my camp.

No there doing the whole thing, getting the permits, Installation, hauling away, clean up the whole works, mine are going into concrete block and they will have to do some cutting on some things. They say they can install the ten windows in a day. I sure hope they know what there doing.

Yep we are getting ready to do the same thing we have the old school windows with the storm windows on the other side. We are going with the thermal windows but cant decide between sliders, or tilt?

That is the same reason I had a contractor doing my work. The whole job is taken care of. From permits to hauling away. It took the contractor two days to install 13 windows. At my camp it's different. No permits or inspections. I don't know much about what I am doing so I learn as I go. For clean up I haul it to the back of my 40 acres into the deep woods where no one sees it but the wild life or someone hunting. On top of it all I enjoy doing the work.

We dont have any permits, or inspections, and we get a $500 credit on our light bill. We had the light co come out to do an (energy audit) and they said if we replace ours with more energy efficient windows we would recieve the energy credit. You guys might want to check with your local power provider for incentives.

I looked into everything I could. The only thing I could find was a 500 dollar income tax break. Seeing I don't pay income tax anymore I can't get the 500 dollars. They must just hand out the money different in your state. Sure not going to hurt me to call the electric company on this because the most that can happen is the word no. Thanks for the information.

Well I called the power company and they had me call someone else. Well it ended with a no, but a tax break which I already looked into. I know I will save in energy cost so I am ahead anyways. There is a lot of company's selling windows so do your home work before buying. I went for more of the center of the line up, not the cheapest or the most expensive and vinyl instead of wood.

I know its hard to compare bills from one year to another as the weather is never the same one year to the next but if possible one of you could provide some real life information on energy savings. If the 40 per cent was anywhere near correct it would pay well to have it done. I have never seen a savings of the magnitude reps talk up on siding or windows in years past. The biggest racket was insulation on old homes. It was better but never to the extent talked up. High energy efficient furnaces were the same. They ran cheaper and made better heat but never nearly as cheap as claimed. In more recent years the claims on heating and air units has improved. Maybe windows have as well.

As far a heating my house I heat with wood. Its a whole different thing from gas or fuel oil. To have a good efficient and clean wood fire you need to run them on the hot side. I have found to cool the house is open the windows. I have found I burn anywhere from 10 to 12 18in. face cord a year with about 25 gallons of fuel oil. If I am to see a saving it will be running the air conditioner in the summer time. I have to agree 40% is over the top and weather is never the same from year to year. Sure makes for a good sales pitch. The main reason I am replacing my windows is on a windy night they were very noisy and the siding for looks. What ever saving will be on the plus side.

The guy that did our energy audit said the windows, and a new heat & ac pump would help with saving $$. I could take out the windows put plastic over the holes, and it would be better than the windows we have now. We are getting the vinly replacement tilt double hung windows with 99% argon fill, and it has some type of coating to help with the uv thing. $550 per window.

At that price I sure hope they are top of the line. 3200 to have 12 windows installed. that includes labor. Mine are vinyl tilt double hung with one picture window, low-e glass and argon filled. Also mine are also inserts and more on the lower line of windows. So you would have to compare price as to what you are getting and what I got.

got a link to these ellison inserts or something similar? Is there a DIY option on this at all?

I recently (but over a period of a coupla years) finsihed replacing all the drawer boxes in my house. Just sent measurements to BHK of America - Quality Drawer and Component Systems and they sent me kits. I just glued them up, moved the drawer front over, installed new roller.

We are waiting on a 2nd quote from Lowes. I think they will be cheaper, and they carry pella windows. Champion gave us a quote of $5639.00 with installation. American Home design was $11,282 with installation all these quotes are for 11 windows.

Sounds like a nice set up. What drawers are you replacing? Kitchen cabinets. I know through the years I had replace mine.

I did it in 3 'portions' to space out the expense and work. I ordered I think 2 drawer kits just to make sure it wasn't outside my comfort zone. Started with the worst drawers in the 2 bathrooms. next group was the worst drawers in the kitchen, final group was the remainder. A few weren't really horrible, but they all were old press-board with sagging Masonite bottoms from the mid-70s. Some had already been reworked by prev. owner and a couple had been reworked by me. I kept a coupla the larger old ones to throw 'stuff' in out in the garage. Now they are Russian Birch plywood with new rollers. They aren't dovetailed, but they are dowel-pinned and glued-up with Titebond III. They will last longer than the first group did! Audra at BHK was great to work with and I only had one kit that had a problem, missing some dowel holes on one panel - they just sent an entire new kit! great customer service. Dimensions were dead on.

When I installed my kitchen which I did myself I shopped for price. Don't remember what I paid but Lowes had the best kitchen prices. Lowes came out to my house and looked at the window and siding job, but never got back to me with anything more so I gave up on them. The window and siding job I got my best price from the place I thought would be the worst and that was the local lumber yard a mile down the road from me.

The drawer kits sure sound like the way to go. One of my hobbies is my wood shop so I have all the equipment to make my own drawers. It all depends on how much time I want to spend on making a drawer as if I make them with dovetails or not. To make a good dovetail drawer is very time consuming which is more for furniture. As far as glues go's I have used just about everything from child's paste (which works just fine) to expensive what ever. I find that Franklins is my favor glue brand.

You were saying complete Simonton windows into concrete block, top of the line windows with labor it sounds like the right price to me. Yes mine were cheaper but also they were inserts which just go in place of the old windows, lot less labor and also mine are cheaper brand windows. My old windows are Anderson windows which are 40 years old and will say only 4 windows really needed replacing and they could of been repaired. Anderson sells a complete repair kit and your window is like a new window when the repair kit is installed. The Anderson repair kits were more money then then the Ellison inserts with labor. Then seeing I was going the have the job done by a contractor I replaced all my windows. My whole job started out I was going to just have vinyl siding installed on my house. Then when the sales men looked at the siding job, they said to me you need new windows also. I know on a real windy day they did make some whistling noises so I knew they had to be leaking air. As a rule I am not a person that takes to heart what a sales person tells me.

I sure couldn't just fork the money for mine.. I did it the great American way by going to the bank. I have just paid my car off so its just like a big loop that the payments never stop. 60 year old windows with storms. I can still remember when we had to install the screens in the summer time and the storm windows in the winter. Also I remember the big stack of storm windows and screens that my father stored in the barn. One of my jobs as to clean and paint the dam things. Things sure have improved since 1954.

I really don't know too much about the windows other then they were about ten years old and he died. Just that when ever he would mention them it was always a positive thing. Windows isn't really what we talked about as a family unless we were having a problem with them.
