need source for old chainsaw parts

Ever once in a wile I have some one wants me to repair a old chain saw. I have found that with the labor and parts its just as cheap to buy a new chain saw which I tell then to do.

If someone told me that Id be offended if it was old big saw like the Homelite 360 or Poulan 3700. But would probably have no problem accepting it if was just trim saw like a Homelite XL/XL2.

First of all I repair not use so I have no idea what a Homelite 360 or Poulan 3700 are and could care less. Someone brings me a chain saw that they have setting someplace for who knows how long and has a limb or two to cut up. Now they can't get this saw running so they bring it to me so I can fix it for a little of nothing. My first thought is if this saw needs parts how many hours will I have to look for parts and just how much time and money will I have to spend repairing it. Now to cut up this limb in their front yard how much do you think I will make on this repair if anything. Now the limb is all cut and the saw can sit with the old gas in it for another few years. Now they will tell me what a bad job I did because it wouldn't start again. So yes I will offend them and tell them to rent or buy a cheap saw. If someone is doing some serous chain sawing they don't bring their saw to my small shop for repairs. What their saw is worth isn't the point here and I will bet you or them don't work for free.

Sorry to hear that you know what a Homelite 360 and Poulan 3700 are. Any repair tech should know what model there repairing and most common failures that it has. Then start by diagnosing common failure parts on the saw then move on to other areas in the diagnosis. You gotta know where to get the parts for the older saws.

It would help if I had a little interest in repairing chainsaws, no money in them. Just might be that I am dumber then a post next to you and I sure as hell don't want to learn. Just makes anyone wonder how I made a living all my life doing this type of work. :confused2:
No money in chainsaws? I charge same shop rate as I do on mowers or trachoes, so I find otherwise. I do agree, it is good to inform customers up front of your opinion that the saw may be not worth it. I let them decide. If needs be I can rent them one if they elect not to fix theirs or buy a new one. I have all three avenues, so I cover their needs one way or another.
Side note- I resurrected a Poulan 3700 with a bow the other week. Fun project. Made $120 labor.
