Hello all, I hope everyone is well. I am stumped about my 5500 Watt generator with a 10HP Briggs & Stratton engine. It is Model 19E412 Type 0132-01. It became hard to start unless starting fluid was used. I cleaned the carb-No change. So, I searched online and found a replacement carburetor that was supposedly for my model engine. It looked very similar and had the proper linkages. I installed it and also replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. I was disappointed that it would not start unless I used starting fluid. It also surges from time to time after I get it running. I also have to keep the choke on about 60% or it will start to die. I have adjusted on what I assume to be the air/fuel mix screw. It never seems to make a difference. Anyone have any thoughts? Did I get a bad cheap chinese made carburetor? Could it be another issue? I was so hoping a simple carb change would do the trick. Thanks in advance.

See pages 18 & 19 in parts manual above with your 8 digit Code # from engine. Carburetor overhaul kits are item 121 new carburetors item 125. For best performance use B&S OEM parts.

Thanks for the reply. But this is a brand new aftermarket carburetor purchased thru Amazon and was for this model engine. That’s what is stumping me. If a rebuild was needed, I doubt B&S OEM parts will work in it. I have checked it and it’s clean. The original had become all gummed up. So, I threw it away.

Welcome to the wonderful world of defective parts sold on Amazon
If you used your credit card then see if they will do a refund because the part is defective
You can try Amazon but they will tell you that are just the platform & not responsible for the quality of the stuff sold by the "private vendors"
You can try complaining to the vendor but don't hold your breath.
In future buy your aftermarket parts from a real mower shop ( on line or bricks & mortar)
Or get them via Alibaba or AliExpress
Both of these Run the business on an escrow basis so no vendor gets paid until the customer verifies that the parts have arrived ,are of good quality and do what the add said they will do

Being a fairly old L head (side valve) engine have you checked the valve clearances? Tend to close up over time leading to valves not closing at the right time.

All i can do is shake my head that the original carb was thrown away as 99% of them are repairable but people see those el cheapo Amazon and eBay carbs and just jump right into buying them.

Thanks guys for taking time to offer help. I will check the valves. They have not been checked. I will get another carb from a reputable shop.

Goes like this.
A quality parts maker will put their name on the item so every one knows who made these good parts and buy more of the same brand
Quality unbranded parts makers ( because you sell them to a lot of different wholesalers ) will at least have identifing numbers so a bad batch can be identified & recalled and the problems rectified.

Junk parts have nothing on them to identify where & when they were made
The bulk of what is on ebay or amazon fits into the latter category.

A plain cardboard box is frationally cheaper than a printed box with the retailers name or brand on it.
If the vendor can not afford the 2¢ to brand the packaging that tells you a lot about what you were considering purchasing .

Thanks! I have checked the valves and found the exhaust valve lash out of spec quite a bit. I have corrected that and ordered a new carb. This generator is 20+ yrs old. It was a pull start new. Luckily, the motor frame accepted the parts to add a starter so I converted it to electric start 15 yrs ago. This is the last $ I will spend on it. If this doesn’t take care of it I will simply buy a newer and larger generator.
