I have a murray rider, 425014x92a, that will shift and run in reverse and 1st gear. The lever will not even move any further than first. I have little knowledge of the transaxle, but I can see there are no obstructions between there and the lever. Also, this mower has not been driven in 3+ years.

Recheck model number, not a good number. Lubricate all linkages & give it a try.

Dana transaxle, very similar to a Perless, which you can find manuals on line. You don't say if you have a 4,5 or 6 speed , but my guess is a 5 speed. That being the case my guess is that after sitting for 3 years the shift collars are being blocked by hard grease, not allowing the keys to get past the first collar. Try this, jack up the rear end, shift it into 1st gear and with an assistant turn both wheels forward slowly. As you are turning try forcing the shift levering into 2nd. You might get lucky and get the keys to move. If you can't get it to move you will have to pull the tranny and open it up. Then again you may just disregard my post, as you posted in another thread, I'm just a bully asking for a muffle belt.

No, I only agreed your comment could have been taken in a negative manner. I, however, can take criticism and am open to any and all suggestions. Especially from those that obviously are more knowledgeable. I'm not sure how many gears, as this thing is so old there are no markers. Im inclined to agree with 5. If I do have to open this thing, is there anything to be careful of?

Yes, cutting your fingers. I'm not kidding, there are many sharp parts an if you don't cut yourself at least twice, you're lucky. If you do remove the tranny don't open it up until your post the Dana numbers, as you don't want it open without a parts breakdown handy. Counting the notches by the shift lever should tell you the speed. Oh by the way, my comment was intended to be negative, as it is very difficult to help anyone who is not willing to help us by giving the info we need. I also suspect he didn't know what he was doing in the first place, so he just left.

You are probably right. Where abouts will the numbers be located?

Tag on the tranny, most of the time left hand side.
