Looking at getting an early 80's Murray 36. Interested in just the tractor, without the mower deck. Found one for $20 w/o an engine. From what I've read, these were equipped with a 11hp Briggs. I have a 5hp lawn boy 2-cycle engine I would like to mount on the mower. I believe it would work just to drive the tractor itself. Wanting a winter project, and the kids would enjoy it.

Here's a few of what I've got done so far. The engine is just sitting on the frame in the picture.

Looks nice I like it.

The 5hp will move it but I would go just a little bigger on the engine pulley to make up for the lack of hp and RPMs. Don't go to big or it will be to fast for kids to ride.

hell i remember when new riders had 5 horse and 8 horse engines on them you never heard of a 18 - 30 horse engine on a mower back in the day how ever i have been thinking of putting like a 18-20 horse engine on a push mower frame just for the fun of it but the sift is longer on the big twin the the little 4.5 that came off of it so its going to take some work and engineering since i want it to be safe since there will be a blade spinning at high RPMs under there close to my feet

It has a 3 speed transaxle. I'm wanting to keep it stock, or just a tad above speed wise. I'm not sure what diameter drive pulley came stock.

I would go with a 4 inch pulley. That should put you about 3 mph faster
