In all of that grease or perhaps still inside the diff will be a spring clip
Either a C , E or plain wireclip.
Clean up the diff end of the axel and you will see the slot
If it is square at the bottom then you have lost the E or C clip
If it is round on the bottom it is a plain wire clip.

They usually come out when folks are trying to get the wheels/tires off.

One of the trade techs might be able to get access to an IPL for that box but I can not from outside the loop down here.

Since the differential on these CVT transaxles are riveted together and MTD doesn't any internal parts for them, the axles and differental are only replaced when one fails.

I never had one to come apart but there is always a chance it can happen. And I have never removed the rivets to even see how they locked the axles in place.

thats a symptom of using a maul to beat a stuck rim off of the shaft rather then using a wheel puller

and yes i have done that myself before i took the time to think about what i was doing and just focused on getting the rim off

buy a parts mower with the same shifting style and setup and replace the whole rear end, its never worth trying to fix them and as mentioned, they are made by 3rd party manufacturers so there are few if any sources for getting parts
