Don't bother fixing it until you write a book titled MOWING WITH COMMON SENSE . It may become a best seller.

Not funny, nor useful, nor gracious. I guess you never made mistakes in your life, or had any mishaps. Keep your personal judgement calls to yourself.

When you started the thread I thought you did a lot of damage. Just a broken mandrel is no big expense. If it was me I would remove the deck and not only change the broken mandrel, but also change all the bearings in the deck. This also will give you a good chance to give the deck a good cleaning and check for any cracks or other damage. Do the job right the first time, little more time and work but well worth it.

Senior citizen - we've all have done this he said it was hidden in tall weeds sometimes you just can't see these things until its to late. You should be more considerate to the people who come here looking for help, not trying to push them away.

To the OP I am glad your ok I bet you will find this a quick fix I would replace the mandrel, blade, belt. And definately inspect the other pulleys and mandrels for stress damage as said above if your going to have the deck off might as well give it a good cleaning and change the blade belt.

Geez, you guys are so inspiring- so generous for info/tips/encouragement!

So, now, I removed the 4 rusty bolts from under the deck that hold the "BLADE SPINDLE ASSEMBLY COMP", AS THE PARTS MANUAL CALLS IT (not sure exactly if thats what you mean by the "mandrel", or is the mandrel just a PORTION of that assembly(?). Since member above recomended to change out bearing, that implies I take apart the assembly to get to that bearing, right? (link/photo here of a typical assembly......)

other thing- man, got the assembly pictured in link on bench, and cant get that pulley nuut off for beans! Sooooo tight! What kind of torque did they put that on with? I even tried to hold down pulley with chain "grips", and propaned the nut. No luck.

Thanks, people.

So what exactly was damaged? You can drop the shaft out by just removing the pulley on top and tapping the haft and bearings out of the housing, but if you don't have access to an impact wrench, you may need to rebolt the mandrel back to the deck and use a breaker bar.

I am surprised you got the bolts out without breaking them. Let us know what exactly is torn up, maybe put up a few pics before dark.

Right, Fish- its item # 39. They call it blade spindle (part 618-0138). The very botom of that has a toothed end, where the blade center fits in like jigsaw puzzle . Its stripped. I need a whole new assembly (part 39). Right? Part diagram you show does not show that assembly as a "come apart" piece- its the whole thing or nothing.......
