Looking for a recoil starter assembly from a Walmart Briggs & Stratton lawnmower

A friend was given a Walmart Briggs & Stratton lawnmower, one of the small ones. It needs the recoil starter assembly.

The only two numbers on the mower are: 13-019-51-96638 and a serial number on a sticker (not the emissions sticker) 0702195409321.

Neither of these numbers seems to lead anywhere. The muffler has had any shielding taken off it. Any decals that were on the deck are long gone.

Thanks,

wnlewis

That mower is new enough to be the OHV engine. May want to look at the side of the block. Some of the newer engines have the model number etched into the block. Believe on the Muffler side of the engine block.

Some newer Briggs have a QR code too.

The first number is missing digit(s). Format YYMMDDFC-SERIAL. Missing the part of the month number.

The best that I have been able to come up with are the following pictures.

We need to replace the top assembly, or at least the cogged assembly that engages the top of the engine and to which is attached the pull cord and rewind mechanism.

Thank you!

What would you recommend for replacement?

How did you identify the correct model?

Again,

Thank you for your help.

You were missing a number in your initial post that was on the gas tank which I ran through the Briggs dealer lookup to get the model number

As far as repair of the starter you can either replace the starter assembly which will require drilling out the rivets from the blower housing which is part number 499706 or replace the following parts to repair the current starter

499901 pulley/spring assembly
2x 281505s which I am thinking come in single packs but you need two
692299 friction plate because the current one is most likely warped.

Was it the 381160?

The most time effective way to do this repair would be to replace the starter assembly. That also makes all of the parts new and includes the cord and pull, which are also needed. I'm also thinking of replacing the part that the pawls engage, 455 the cup flywheel.

I plan to keep the original assembly, buy the other parts and learn how to repair the starter assembly myself, since it would be good practice and would give my friend a spare assembly.

I live in a town 30 miles away from the nearest good service and supply store for lawnmowers, etc. With the costs of gasoline, and with time being very critical, I was wondering if setting up a lawnmower and sharpening service might be worthwhile - we have no place any closer than that. I have experience in retail and agricultural equipment and also have many years of doing online service and have a pretty good handle on computers and software.

Some of my friends who are in lawn care and in tree care have said that they would be supportive if I were to open such a business. It would need to be done right with excellent customer service. What would I need to learn?

Thanks,

wnlewis

I don't think I have ever seen one of the cups cause issues. what happens a lot is the starter rope is connected to the handle, and as the mower is pushed the handle moves up and down which pulls the starter rope a small amount which in some cases will cause the starter pawls to rub against the starter cup causing damage.

And you were missing the 0. instead of 13 019 it was 13 0109 on the serial number And be aware that sometimes changing the starter assembly may not be faster or more economical. Sometimes those rivets don't cooperate and will spin after being partially drilled, Basically I guess I am saying that the internal parts of the starter complete with a new starter rope can be installed in the time it takes to drill the rivets and then bolt the new starter to the blower housing.

OK. That sounds reasonable.

I have put the parts on order and added a 691915 starter rope grip and a 697316 starter rope.

Thank you for the good advice.

Excellent! Thank you!
I will try to line up some time today and start cleaning with the one that I am working on for my friend.
Oil changes are my bane.
What do you know about either vacuum oil sucking systems or adding drain plugs on the bottom of an engine?

Love my Briggs and Stratton 4 liter pump. If you have 5 mowers like I do, a sump pump evac kit is a MUST.

I will have to check, but I believe that the "generic" version of this is made in Emporia, Kansas. They make several different sizes. Thanks for nudging me. I need one of these to take better care of my equipment. Thanks!

Hose is long enough to work on your car too.

in 11 years I have not touched an oil drain
Boating shops will heave a better range of oil pumps and usually cheaper than mower shops
I have 4 a 2 liter, 2 x 6 litres 1x 10 litres
Good for cleaning up fluid spills on the workshop floor and degassing resin mixes as well

I'm not sure why you need a new recoil starter, it looks like your rope broke off, you can easily replace it with new rope from any hardware store. take a part of the rope for reference with you and bring it to find the correct size.
edit: just saw you already rigged up nylon rope and a piece of wood for a handle, is the spring inside broken/rusty?

The new parts are in place and it was a good thing that the old parts got replaced. The pawls were missing, the cover over the pawls was shot. The recoil spring was not very good. There was no pull handle and the cord was too short to reach the handle of the lawn mower.

All I need now is the front screw for the blower housing, a new air filter, and a new spark plug. Is the front screw an 80-32, or something else. I bought a couple of small sheet metal screws to fasten the oil fill pipe to the blower housing. The project is progressing nicely. That you everyone for the help and information.

I meant to say, an 8-32.
