Left rear wheel falls off / Toro SR-21S Super recycling mower/ Direct drive/ Model 20042

Have not been here for a while but would like to share and ask your opinion.

My left rear wheel fell off. Found the bolt but not nut. Found a nut that fit the threads but had to slightly grind the sides of the nut to fit in bolt slot. Would have to get the OEM nut to fit in but need it fixed today. This old mower has a slot the shape of nut to fit in and hard to put in. All Good so far and tightening wheel.

However, tightened it but could not all the way since tire will not spin freely so backed off and cut the rest of lawn. Tightened up right side wheel and was loose but spinned freely.

I figure the left rear wheel which from the outside has been banged up alot, many gouges in plastic, is done and needs replacing.

Mower is 15 plus years old, smokes a little sometimes but good shape to cut a house once a week.

Check the bushing on that rear wheel, probably worn causing the wheel to catch the bolt, baking it out. I use nylock nuts on those wheels solving the problem.

Thanks for the feedback. Getting some used wheels and will checkout the bushings when I install. Like the idea of nylocks.

I took apart the rear wheels and replaced some parts and cleaned it up a while ago. The mower was easier to push afterwards, less friction but not sure if I replaced the bushing in the pivot arm.

Replaced the two rear tires but found out the tire that fell off was missing wheel cover spacer. This explains why the tire that fell off could not be tightened when reinstalled causing wheel to lock. So, need to buy that and bushings. Took the old tires and knocked out their bushing with a screwdriver to see how to remove. Pretty easy so will order 8 two for each of four wheels. Will also buy nylock nuts. Thanks again.

Ordered all the parts I need and removed the bushings from the front and rear tire. Removed the bushings correctly from rear but incorrectly from front. The front I pshed both out and realized some plastic fell out. That was the lip the bushing sits up against hence they should be pushed out one at a time from the inside. Hopefully they will stay in place. May have to add some glue on fronts. That said will see how tight the bushings go into the bolts since bolts may be worn and have to buy new.

Also noticed front pivot arm may need to be rebuilt and some play but not alot. The last thing noticed the tires for rear have goood teeth but gear on the axle looks a little worn. Since

Since these are not urgent may leave until winter and only a few gas cuts needed. Thought about buying a new one but my Dad bought this 20 years ago for me and still runs good. i have learned alot about repairing lawn mowers thanks to the folks here. Saving me money.
